This is good news for those of us who got the letter from the VA in the last month. They found the missing lap top and the information was not accessed....
Feds Recover Stolen Laptop With Veterans' Personal Info Thursday, June 29, 2006 foxnews.com
<More Here>
WASHINGTON  The government has recovered the stolen laptop computer and hard drive containing sensitive data for up to 26.5 million veterans and military personnel, Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson said Thursday. The FBI said data on veterans, military personnel in the recovered laptop computer was not accessed after it was stolen. Nicholson said there have been no reports of identity theft stemming from the May 3 burglary at a VA employee's Maryland home. "There is reason to be optimistic," Nicholson told a House committee at the opening of a hearing on one of the worst breaches of information security. "There is not a certainty, but we have to remain hopeful they have not been compromised." Nicholson offered no immediate details on how the laptop was recovered. He acknowledged that the burglary "has brought to the light of day some real deficiencies in the manner we handled personal data."
"If there's a redeeming part of this, I think we can turn this around," he said. Newly discovered documents show that the VA analyst blamed for losing the laptop had received permission to work from home with data that included millions of Social Security numbers and other personal information on veterans and military personnel.

Well, I guess that means I (and the other 26.5M vets) aren't going to get the gazillion dollar settlement, as desired by some plaintiff's attorney. I can see where some service should have been provided, should damages actually have been done, but these leeches would have gotten somewhere between $1B and $2B, based on contingencies for taking on a class-action that no one (that I spoke with) really wanted. Sorry to see your dreams go up in smoke, pecker-woods

No kiddin. I bet there were some serious tail end chewings going down in the VA bureacuracy when that thing came up missing.
Some real serious yelling. I wonder how many if any were fired as a result? Someone sure needs to get fired in that particular arena of government bureacracy.

I just wish that things hadn't deteriorated to the point that my first thought was "Yeah, right. Sure it's the same one and not one they pulled out of inventory..."

Why should they fire anyone when for a few extra million every laptop they use can be outfitted with a lo-jack and another department can be set up to monitor them...

I heard that it was recovered after a $50,000.00 reward was given to an informant. Sounds like BS, but a bargain in the long run.

If they play it right, it could mean a couple billion going out to friends and useless leaching in-laws. Afterall, it's not as if it came out of their pockets, and they can always incease taxes to pay for it.

Does that mean I don't get a year of credit monitoring for free
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.
