http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/oil_temp_gauge.htmlAnyone have any experience with one of these? Is it worth it? I do quite a bit of heavy commuting traffi plus planned afew long hauls this summer & saw this & thought it might be good to have on the road in the middle of nowhere. If so what would the top end temp for the oil before I should be pullin off the road tryin to cool the ting down? Just lemme know

i have one, love it, a few other have one also. when it is hot i am normally around 200, on cooler days it stays around 170. i believe most say when it closes in on 250 it is time to shut down. i say go for it its nice to have

I'm really not sure how well those will work when they have no direct contact with the oil. It could be that crankcase temp is a better thing than oil temp to know anyway. I do have some misgivings about having to lean out and look down to see the guage, but there are other equally bad problems with the electric kind that have a sensor in the drain plug.

I have one and I like it very much (but I'm a gauge freak). I don't know how accurate the number itself is, as Greybeard says, since it is not submerged, but it does give you data for comparison so you know what number is "normal" for you bike so you can tell when something is then not normal. Mine has a red dot at 250 so like most here I consider that the high end of an acceptable tempurature range. Like Frank, I'm usually around 200 and I try and find some way to cool things down when the needle swings past 250. As far as checking it, yeah, checking it while roaring down the freeway is probably not the best thing to do but if stuck in stop and go (totally stopped, feet on the ground) or at a stoplight, I will glance dance and see what is going on. For the price it's a good investment.

I got one too. Good stuff. I always suspected I was hot and I was. Went back to the stock oil cooler, all good. It isn't submerged, but it gets splashed with oil. And like someone said, it's consistant, so it is a good measure of relative temp differences. And there's the red dot at 250.

Mine seldom goes over 200f. When not riding hard or in stop'n go traffic, stays around 190. Was looking for a spot to put a small, white LED to shine on it at night. Plus, you can remove by hand. There is no slot to get chewed up.

Good idea on the LED. I'm sure you could rig something up from under the tank. Or under the carbs.

Ok I got mine & was reading the piece of paper that came with it & it mentions a 'measuring rod'... like there's a small aluminum tube to trnsfer the heat from the oil to that actual display... but I didn't get anything... should I have?

if you look on the underside of the gauge itself, the part that actually sees the inside of the case, there's a small "rod" inside where the threads are, but it doesn't extend PAST the threads at all.
