I've seen alot of posts talking about installing a 'freak'. I searched for the reference, no joy. So what is it and why do I want one?

Look here. http://www.newspeedmaster.com/html/airbox_removal_kit.html It is an airbox removal kit that puts two K&N pod air filters on your carbs for better breathing, i.e. more power with proper jetting.

Is it true that down low it can run like crap? Would 45 pilots and Thunderbird Sport needles solve it completly? Up to what revs does suffer? Is it annoying? Can you get it to run successfully throughout the entire rev range? I know, qestions, questions, but i need good honest answers. To many opinions for this old head.

Yes and no. If you starting messing with too many variables, you can definitely get it to run like crap. If you take things one at a time, then no, you should be able to tune it to run great in all RPMs. Like mine! Here's what I did in order: TOR shorties from the get go -Didn't touch the pilots Freak/carb screws/160s -Balance carbs -Didn't touch the pilots Epcos -Balance carbs -Didn't touch the pilots Drill slides & TBS needles -Balance carbs -Didn't touch the pilots Thumb screws -Balance carbs -Didn't touch the pilots 150s (160s too rich) -Balance carbs -Didn't touch the pilots Note the theme....

Yeah sometimes it can run rough, but as long as you do it one at a time, it should be fine. I think the idea is to get the mains set, then worry about the idle/low throttle stuff. I still have the stock pilots, altho I am getting some popping. I'll mess with my air screws for a while then worry about the 45s if it is still junky. I also think that this summer humidity/heat makes it run differently.

Of course if you have read your most recent issue of 'Torque' It is KNN not K&N.

I just did the Freak install a couple weeks ago and I'm running just a tad rich. I dropped the mains from 150 to 145 but I'm still running a little rich so I might go back to 42 pilots instead of the 45's that I've been running for the past 2 years. My old setup was 130/45 w/airbox and long Epco pipes and the plug color was almost perfect.
