it seems Kuryakyn sells some HID plug n' plays (uses stock lamp housing) for a 7in lamp, does this work for my '06 SM? Curious as well as to what everyone thinks of HID headlights on motorcycles.

The only replacement bulbs I see on there are for Road Star and HD bikes (not surprising ). There is, however, a complete 5 3/4 inch headlight assembly that would probably be able to be used on any BA/SM, provided you're willing to part with almost $500. Heres a linkYes, I know this is not Kuryakyns website, but the only thing they seemed to have was the replacement bulb for the Road Star.

I know a sylvania 7" sealed beam unit works. So I would imagine just about any 7" unit would work, possibly with some modifications. As long as it has that lip on the edge for the spring bracket to hold it to the chrome rim.

I just installed a Sylvania Silverstar 7" sealed beam. It makes the stock lamp look like Christmas lights. Well worth the $20.

I installed the middle range one, not the silverstar, but like the 15$ model, ya know? Looks great! I guess I am still a little shaky cause I heard the silverstars burn out fast, but that was the bulbs, not the sealed beams.

Is that silverstar sealed beam universal or is there a part number? How easy is it to swap? This being my first bike and haven't started dismantling it yet... although you guys seem to make it sound quite fun.

I wanna say it's a 6024 number or something like that. It's a 7" sealed beam. There are 3 flavors of Sylvania. Standard, bright (the one I got) and the silverstar. IT's REALLY simple. Two screws to pop the front of the loght off, then undo the spring thing around the outside to release the lense from the chrome ring, then unplug the bulb, plug in the sealed unit, stick it in the chrome ring and pop the spring retainer back in. Done.

I went through several Silverstar H-4s in a short time until I discovered they make one just for bikes. It has lasted longer than all the previous ones combined.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I've had my Silverstar sealed beam for 8 or 10 months; about 9,000 miles.

Good to know! Miles more than time I think, since I bet the problem with the regular bulbs was wear not run time...
