I just found this place..in a word...Awesome. I hope to learn a ton from all the "old hands" around here.

I am on the downhill side of a divorce and just got home from my local Triumph dealer! I grew up on bikes in Northern Cali, my dad used to ride me around on a late 60's Bonnie and it never got out of my blood. The soon to be X said no deal on a bike. Fortunately, that is soon to be a non issue. I test rode a new America and Speedmaster. My dilemma, I like the riding position of the Speedmaster but the look of the America. The dealer said change the bars and seat for about a grand?????? Does that sound right? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ezcue, if you go with the America, you can either buy a Speedmaster bar (about $140 I think) and risers from Brent at NewSpeedmaster.com, or aftermarket drag bars and risers. Your cables and wiring should be fine I believe, so yes, you should be able to do it for MUCH less than a grand, more like a couple hundred. Especially if you do the labor yourself, which is not all that complicated. Btw, welcome!

How do you buy a bike without a factory seat?

btw Joe, $1k is WAY too much to swap bars and the seat.

You might be able to work out a trade for your America bars/seat with someone here for SM bars/seat.

It's been done several times...

...and welcome!! (the best site anywhere for these bikes)

I changed my America bars and risers for the Speedmaster ones for less than $150! If you post on here I'm sure you'll find someone willing to sell theirs for a fair price.

Hey Joe (no I'm not going to start singing!!)
Welcome aboard friend.

A grand sounds way too much.
Get the America and do the mod yourself afterwards.

Once again, welcome.

Ezcue,
I would get the America and do the mods yourself. For $1000 you can change the bars, seat, and have a nice chunk of money left for chrome, pipes, or some other mods.

Welcome Ezcue,

Glad your coming back to Triumph. Was your dealer talking about installing factory Speedmaster bars or aftermarket ones? What kinda seat? Anyway, everyone is right you should be able to do the mods for less than $1000.00 and Brent has alot of great stuff at newspeedmaster.com. My previous bike was an America and I priced out the drag bar switchover @ my local. That swap was only about $280.00 CDN and included all labour and aftermarket bars. They also let me swap the new factory seat for a Corbin they had in stock for a low price. Maybe your guys will try accomodate you in the same way since your buying a new bike and all. Anyway congrats and safe riding.

Ezcue,

I have 1 statement, 1 suggestion and 2 rules for you:

Statement : I have SM handlebars I used for only 2 months you can have (no cost).

Suggestion: Please use on abovementioned "soon to be X's" head for depriving you of the fun that you have missed out on, before mounting them on said motorcycle.

Rule nr 1: Never allow anyone to determine or curtail your happiness.

Rule nr 2: Never forget Rule nr 1 !!!

Oh and Welcome to the clinic!

P.S. A little patience may be needed as I would be sending the handlebars from Greece.

Welcome Joe! I can't think of a faster way to get over a divorce then getting a America/speedmaster You should be
able to do a lot more for a grand then just a seat and bars. Maybe even consider louder exhaust pipes. If I had it to do over I would have purchased after market pipes before I took delivery and had them installed. These bike are way too quiet out of the box. Now all you have to do is decide on a color, but don't get these yahoos here started on that one.

I couldn't wait for my divorce to get over so I could get my Speedy. It took me a year to get things sorted out, but so very worth it! It is awesome to be back on two wheels again. Congrats on coming back to life!

Wow, thanks a ton for all the responses. I am currently talking with Charlie about the Blue 03 he has in the classifieds section. Woooweee what a stunner. I have a ton of skymiles with Delta, could fly up and CRUISE back to MS from NH.

If you shop carefully and buy some things from the classified board here, a grand should get you drag bars and risers, a nice aftermarket seat, aftermarket pipes and enough gas to go for a really long ride.

If you fly up to NH be sure to let us know, I bet you could meet a half a dozen guys from the board!
And yeah, watch those classifieds. I have gotten a TON of stuff off there at great prices and I have sold or given away a bunch of stuff too.

So you're getting rid of the 'ol Ball & Chain and getting a magic carpet. Good choice. This is why you should insist that all first dates be taken on two wheels. Good luck with the new bike.
