For those who have installed a Tach on a stock 2005 America, what is the RPM at 65 MPH.

i forget 65 but at 70-75 i am around 4000

Between 4000 and 4500 depending on if I'm on an incline or level ground.

I just assumed the front wheel must be coming off the ground - must be rough terrain.

Thanks for the info. I thought about getting a Tach, but $160 is a bit steep for my pocketbook.

I m pretty new at this, but mine is about 4000 rpms in 5th grear at 65 mph (once up to speed). Maybe a little over 4000 rpm. I like 60 mph better not as windy.

Hey Bennybmn - Can you post or email a pic of the Drag specialties tach? Does it mount in the same location as the Triumph branded one?

Happy to post it when I get it on there. No it does not mount in the console, I'll be mounting it next to the speedo. I know some other guys here have it already... OK found one  Member Whitt has it.

dannsh, assuming stock 17t Sprocket and all else on the America, and level ground, this chart should show you. Also will give you an idea for going to an 18t.

dannsh, there is a noticeable difference in the starting acceleration with the 18, but with normal exhaust and carb mods, you are close to a stock bike with the 17. If you read many of the threads on this subject, you'll find that many prefer the advantages of the 18 over any low end umph loss. There are times I miss the 17. I don't like my Harley friends leaving me at a light. If I went back to the 17, they would always be in my rear view mirror. Granted, I can still pass them if there's distance to catch up.

I found your post in Performance Mods.
"1- 17 on the TA 2- the Triumph has rubber on both sides that is supposed to dampen any chain vibrations, but most people can't tell the difference. 3- 18 is much better at highway speeds with less vibration, but there is a trade off in dead start acceleration. Exhaust upgrades, carb and airbox mods offset a lot of the loss. 4- You can get quality sprocketes at Brent"s (http://www.newspeedmaster.com/index.html) or at BellaCorse (http://www.bellacorse.com/index.html)."

dannsh, I can't really say the difference in acceleration was really noticeable. Especially after I drilled the slides on the Carbs. I mean, I'm not out dragging from light to light, but it's never slow leaving the line if I don't want it to...

I liked my stock 16t alot, and was real hesitant to change it but do make frequent long runs of 160 miles or so one-way. I never had a problem with the higher revs of the 16t - no buzziness or vibration, either. Just thought the 18t made better sense from a fuel economy standpoint, and maybe it does. What I DO appreciate about the 18t the most is, though, is the longer legs it has in each of the lower gears. I can cruise for miles in a 40 mph zone in second gear at 4000 rpm. Comfortably. And at 50 mph, as the chart above indicates, 4000 rpm in 3rd - right in the power band. I don't miss the punch off the line at all, and can easily hit about 50 mph in 1st before the rev limiter kicks in - leaving most of my riding friends in the dust as they short-shift their way there. Leaves them quite startled, actually - when they've shifted 2-3 times already. These bikes love the revs - after reading a suggestion here long ago about not shifting before 5000 rpm, I rarely do now. It's a great feeling, too. (I think those with louder pipes might be a little more noise-conscious, and probably short-shift a little more than they would otherwise.) The stock pipes rock after they've seasoned in. Stealth mode at idle only.

Keith: You did mean 18t and not 16t? I will talk with my dealer at first service time about changing out the sprocket. From what you say it sounds like I would also like the 18t for street riding. I would not have to change gears as often.

I did. I changed to the 18t about 13k miles ago. You are correct - if you don't mind the revs (the bike sure won't), you won't have to change gears as much at less than highway speeds. You can, of course, but these engines really like the revs. If you change your pipes, though, you may find them too loud to rev it much on the street, at least in some situations. Depends on the neighborhood, I guess.

I talked with my dealer this morning. I plan on going to the 18t when I take my America in for it's first service.
