How important is the speedometer cable loop on our front fenders? My stock one has been broken for a long time, and I haven't done anything about it yet. I don't really see any big purpose for the cable holder, but I may be missing something about it (Triumph probably wouldn't put it on the bike if it didn't have a good reason). I've seen the replacement ones, or could probably get a new rubber one from the dealer every couple of months until the warranty's up. Just wondering if it's really a necessary part.
Thanks, Will

Mine broke quickly ....dont remember how or when but I discovered it broken one day. I just used a bit of super glue and fixed it. So far it is holding up.
You can buy some nice permanent chrome pieces from Brent of course that dress things up nicely. They can be found on ebay as well.

The chrome ones are really pretty, but I've found a really cheap way to fix it is to take the original rubber "peg," cut off the rubber loop part (I'm sure that's what broke), drill a small hole through it, and put a black zip-tie through. Works like a charm, don't need to disassemble anything to put it on, and it costs all of $.12. I'd love the machined one, but I can't afford the $50 part, especially when I can do it with... well, virtually nothing. --Jaeger

The loop keeps the cable from melting to the header pipe. Inspect yours and ensure this has not already happened.

Jaeger, you may classify yourself as a Professional BS artist ( I can neither confirm nor deny) ...but this idea for the broken cable loop is NOT BS for sure! Good idea...I'm going to use it...like you, the $50US part is real nice, but maybe later...I'm getting close to my goodies limit for this season...thanks.

Great idea Jaeger. I am going to do the "zip tie fix" tonight. May have to use neon green, though; I think I'm all out of black ties at home.
Thanks, Will

If you do use a tiewrap, make sure you don't tighten it any more than necessary. The cable needs to be able to slip through it as the fork extends and compresses.

I did the same fix as JAEGER. Look closely at your cable mine was slightly melted when I discovered that the loop was broken. I put a cable tie and let the rubber cable loop in the middle worked real nice. Occassionally I have to recenter the rubber loop but no biggie. Like JAEGER I also plan to get one from brent but with 2 in college money is tight but I did just order the new Haynes manual.

I'll try to remember to toss my make-shift cable loop in the saddle bag when I come up to NH in July... Maybe someone will need it.

Its funny how some of the little bits can really add to the look of the bikes.
A little here and there and they dress up so nice.
I want this for mine as well. I may put it on my christmas list. But then I also want the chrome cam covers for my Black Speedie....I think the contrast of Black tank/ Shiny chrome cam covers and Black engine/ with a chrome wire holder will just look kewl...
My Christmas list is of course ...LONG.

What? You can use it for a mirror, it can blind the Harley guy beside you, it makes your left shoe sparkle in the sun...tons of uses!

I held off getting one from Brent, hoping that he would offer a black one. But that didnt happen so, I got the chrome one anyway. At least I know it wont break like the cheap factory rubber one.

I think they just had a bad batch. When molding a part like that, if the temperature is just a bit off, the rubber will form right when it meets on the far side of the mold, but it won't stick good. Next batch may have been made a little warmer and came out right.

I picked the middle of the road solution at about $20. Just a simple aftermarket billet loop. Here is the past post: Billet loop This can also be found in the tech archives.

Just finished putting a zip tie in place of the rubber ring. Thanks for the tip, very useful. Although it will be a temporary fix because I ordered the chrome speedo cable holder that Brent sells. I like its look and can probably get away with just one more small item. By the time I noticed that my speedo cable loop broke I had two burn throughs on the cable cover. I thought that they were like that from the factory because they are two real even oval shaped holes. They looked so even it seemed like factory but now that I read this thread I guess I see where it could have touched the headers. With only two small burns in the cable cover could this present a problem to the speedo cable as a result of being exposed like water or something else affecting the cable?

I DID NOT REMOVE THE LOOP WHEN IT BROKE, i used the tiewrap method and wrapped it around the loop and snuged it down to the loop, keeping the loop in its original shape. i hope you get that??? i just used an awl and pocked a hole thru the fat part of the holder before it go's thru the fender. it lastd for a couple yrs and then Santa brought me that pretty chrome one from Brents... er...ah... i mean Santa's workshop
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

First week I had my bike, loop broke and I made one out of a stainless eyebolt. Would have left it, but the stock one had an oblong hole, and it looked like my homemade one put an extra curve in speedo cable, so I bought Brent's.

While putting the zip-tie on the rubber fender mount, I inspected my speedo cable closely and there's no damage to it. My bike's an '05 SM, and there is a plastic "figure 8-shaped connector" that holds the speedometer cable to one of the brake lines. It's a little above the midpoint of the cable. I don't know if this little connector is on the earlier models, but on my bike it seems to prevent the speedo cable from coming close to the header pipes. I checked the cable throughout the range of handlebar positions, and it never even came close to the headers. Maybe (if the connector isn't on earlier models) Triumph realized that the fender-mounted cable loop wasn't working very well and put this clamp on as a second-level protection? Will

Over the winter (last year) I sent my cable to Barnett and they made me a new one out of braided stainless. They need to re-use our fittings... Call em and ask em, maybe they can make one from scratch. Goes real well with the brake lines and clutch cable!

Hello everyone! Just thought I would share my idea for a replacement cable loop. All it consists of is a small shackle (stainless steel) an acorn nut,(do acorns have nuts?) a threaded rod coupler, and a few bolts and washers.Total cost under five bucks.Check out my gallery for a pic.Just finished my bike and there will be more pics to follow.Hope you all like my idea.

Mine has been broken for ages and - touch wood - no adverse problems.
Last time the bike was serviced, I got one off the dealer but it disappeared from my pocket on the ride home!
Never bothered with one since ..

Welcome drgnslyr, I come from a boating background so I think the shackle is a great idea!! (if you have not, I'd suggest some blue Loctite on the shackle bolt) btw, your paint does not look stock.... How about some more pics and details?
