So I get to work at the community college yesterday and I notice a hardly parked in one of the handicap parking spots. Last Thursday I noticed the same bike in another handicap slot and called public safety-- they would look into it. I called yesterday, too, only to find out the bike has a handicap sticker. This one’s got me stumped. What could the handicap be, other than it’s a hardly? Anyone heard of this happening?

I know a guy with a peg leg (from the knee down) that rides. Actually he has several bikes, a Bonneville, a Guzzi and a Gold Wing Trike. I am unsure of the details but the Bonnie and the Guzzi have been modified somehow with weights to compensate and the shifter has been moved up by the clutch via cable.

Ya, I know a guy with a goldwing who has one. I'm disabled myself, I have a sticker for my car and truck but not my scoot.

I heard of someone over the weekend with a Speedy he's had modified. He has problems with his arm and so apparently had the throttle moved to a foot control and the brake is on a lever on the left of the bars. Bet he's got a blue badge somewhere...

Didn't meet him though. Would have told him about here!

Not all disabilities are obviously physical - ie: limbs missing.

My old man has a disabled badge for his car and he has a heart problem.

I rode with a guy this weekend that had lost his lower leg during the past year. He has a Harley and a prosthetic limb. When I was on dialysis a few years back my nephrologist got one for me because it was sometimes hard to breathe between dialysis treatments, plus I was very weak. If he has a sticker there is probably a reason. You can't get one without a Dr. signing the application, at least here.

Maybe he was tone deaf. Or suffered from the disability of bad judgement in choosing motorcycles.

My dad has a blue (Disabled) badge. Looking at him he has nothing wrong. He had a stomach op over 10 years ago. 6 months later he was diagonsed with ME. At that time it was yuppie flu, something derided by the press. Since he has been pensioned off from a job he enjoyed - he was an electrical surveyor for the council - but is determined not to be seen not to be laying around. He has done volutary work, he does electrical work for a mate in payment he get gets junk, but he's happy with junk. (well that's what my mum calls it anyway...)
These days he has good days, where he works on my inheritance (the old Triumph) and bad days where he does nothing.

Stone - I'm sure that JB was only joking....

Next you'll be saying that we can't take the mickey out of anyone. Even the French!

Even Disabled people take the mickey out of themselves... it show they are well adjusted and don't take life too seriously. And most of them have every reason to be serious.

I regret that my last post may have offended you. It wasn't intended to "make fun" of people with any recognized and bonafide disability, but I understand your comment.

Having said that, I'm certain to now hear from someone who belongs to the "American Association of Tune Carrying Disabilities" or from the "Bad Judgement Handicap League."

Finally, I have a lower back that goes out on me from time to time and I have dificulty walking even a few feet. This would seem to qualify me for a disabled parking permit, yet I have somehow managed to get along without one. During these episodes, I occasionally will hobble past a load of seemingly healthy folks getting out of a car parked in the handicapped spot. Surely they ALL can't have a disability that would qualify them to park in the handicapped spot, could they? Or how about the healthy and fit spouse of a person with a disbility who drives the car solo and uses the spouses permit to park closer to the store?

I know quite a few who do just that.. one member of the family may have something that qualified them for the permit, and the rest of the family just grabs the placard when they are going out to run errands so they can park in the handicap spots. I also know some who have received the permits for truely trivial reasons. One lady I used to work with got one for being overweight?!?!

Cheers,
Brad

Serious question for Cruiserken:

Does a hip replacement allow you to obtain a handicapped parking permit in CA?

I absolutely love it when someone is handicapped and makes the most out of life by making adjustments to any vehicle and still gets out and enjoys life and traveling.

On Mothers Day, I took Steph to Cascade Locks for a brunch on the Sternwheeler boat. There was an older guy with no legs on the boat in a wheel chair. After pulling back into port, I watched the guy get into his full size Dodge truck. He opened the door, and pull himself up into the truck. And Yes, he was driving. He reached down, grabbed his wheel chair, folded it and put it in the jump seat. It was VERY COOL!!!

Yes, I never bothered getting one, to many immigrants at the DMV. I saw a man at Church Sunday who had prosthetics on both legs, climbed in his F150 and drove off. I have a new job now working on the big overhead signs on the freeway. I ride my motorcycle more now than before the accident. I live with a little pain but I don't consider myself handicapped.

However, the handicap sticker can be misused as well. The last time I was at the DMV there was a younger guy that just came back from Iraq (I thanked him for his service). He got a disability discharge (broke his ankle). Since he was discharged with a disability, he is entitled to get handicap stickers, whether he really needed them or not. And that was why he was there, to get one for his bike and for his car (Hoe rode his bike to the DMV). He wanted to be able to get the primo parking spots. I have mixed feelings about that since there are people that need those parking spots more than he did, but if the law entitles him to those stickers?

I'm currently recovering from a badly broken ankle and I personally wouldn't (and don't) take up the parking space especially as I know that there are other people who really need it and I could be depriving them of it.
I think people who are indifferent (in this way and others) about handicapped people are souless and miserable.

I am a licensed blue card holder... thats were the handel gimby comes from...I have not parked in a handicaped spot for years... but nobody can judge anothers disabilities by looking...if a fat guy gets to park closer to the door than you who cares...it's just more exercise getting there for you...

Oh, come on people!

So EVEN if their disabilities AREN'T readily apparent(bad heart?...smoking induced emphysema?...Obesity?...oh wait a minute. this LAST one IS readily apparent, isn't it? )...the very LEAST these people could do as they exit their cars and walk away, would be for them to fake a d*mn LIMP or somethin', RIGHT???!!!

That way, this WHOLE "controversy" would be MOOT, and people who are out watchin' for things like this can feel safe that justice and fair play has prevailed!!!

Cheers,

I really don't have much of an opinion on this but:

Regardless of any modifications, if you are healthy enough to ride a bike, strong enough to hold it up, and have the the lung capacity to ride in the cold, heat, dirt and smog, you don't need a handicap sticker.

Take that spot Mr. Harley guy. When its full and the old 85 year old lady with a bad mitrol valve and a weak hip has to walk, so what, you deserve it.

I am willing to go out on a limb and say this guy just wants his pretty bike in a bigger space closer to the building for security. Thats fine but he is doing it at the expense of a person who truly needs that spot.

Everything that is an ailment is not a disability. Its called life. I have L-4,5 herniations. I am not disabled, I am old and will not get out of life alive. The original purpose of the spots, now corrupted by the lazy, was for the folks that would be unable to get to the building without them. This country is out of control!

My pinky hurts today, I need a sticker! Bottom line, if you need a sticker and riding is much more active than driving you should be able to sticker a bike. I think not

Here in N.Y. a temporary disability wont get you a sticker, such as a broken bone. Also you dont get them from the dmv here, you get them from the town clerk, You need to have already been disabled for 6 months, documented and proven. The sticker is good for 5 years and then you renew.

One of the ladies here at work said I should have a handicap spot while I am on the crutches. I told her walking to the door was nothing, 2 extra spaces = 18 feet, leave the spaces for others who need them. (We have lots and they are never all used.)

Monday Charlie, the security guard, asked me why I didn't park in my reserved space. I was in my regular space I always park in on the 3rd floor, there is an elevator right there. Seems there was a sign on the primo handicap space on the first floor, made by the lady who said I should have a reserved space. I had Charlie pull it down for me. Then the lady came by all insulted that she had stayed late on Friday making me a sign and I didn't appreciate it. Go figure.

I sometimes think I have half a brain. Does that count as a handicap? (In order to preserve the half a brain I have, I always wear a helmet when riding...)

Here in Iowa we seem to designate at least 1/3 of all parking spaces for handicapped. I swear you can get a handicap sticker for post nasal drip.

My favorites are the old folks who troop to the malls to go power walking in the winter and park in the handicapped spaces.

Why are there so many handicapped spaces outside health clubs? Even if they ARE really handicapped, isn’t the idea to get exercise?

Before I retired from the Navy Reserve we started reserving a bunch of spaces for the handicapped. OK, but if you’re handicapped you can’t be IN the Navy Reserve.

My mother had a heart condition, once she was on the mend she was advised to get more exercise. So what did they do? Gave her a handicapped sticker of course!

Speaking of absurdities, my favorite is still the Braille instructions at the drive through ATM. Obviously a federal mandate

Kinda like when I used to live in Manhattan. I lived in Murry Hill (on the eastern end of 34th street and work on the west side of town. If I was running late I'd ride the bus across town if I happened to walk by a loading bus stop.

It always chapped my a$$ when someone would get on the bus right outside of the gym and ride one block and get off at the next stop. C'mon...you were just working out, why not walk an extra 3 minutes.

In the state of Washington you can be obese and get a handycap spot. The person that should walk the most gets to walk the least.
