I dropped a new K&N air filter in my BA this week (thanks Brent!)-- and I gotta believe it's given the bike a definite HP boost...didn't hit the rev limiter in 2nd gear until darn near 65 mph...that's a boost of about 5 mph I think. Cheap and easy mod-- very nice!! _____________________________________________________ Staintunes, AI & main snorkel removed, K&N

Just curious. Why would you want to wind out second gear to that extent?
I cant ever see myself having a desire to do that I wonder what the Engineers who design the bike think about winding up the bike in such a low gear.

You gotta ride it like you stole it!!!! I always run my bike and vehicles hard but take care of them by changing oil regularly and with quality oil and filters. I perform all of my maintenance myself and when I do change out parts always put quality parts back on my vehicles as well. I think that is why I normally have excellant luck with all of my vehicles and rarely have ever let me down or stranded. I personally don't think there is any problem with running the R's up in whatever gear you are in. As someone on this sight has said before the bottom ends of these bikes are pretty stout and well made. Just my opinion but I ride it like I stole it probably 75% of the time and I don't think I am hurting her, When I left the dealership with her I only took it easy about the first 50-60 miles then I started running her harder and harder, sometimes reaching speeds of 85-90 mph. I have yet to have any problems at all, Knock on wood. Any other thoughts or comments out there???

Just curious more than anything else. Its good the bike can do this. I do not generally ride that aggressively though.
If it dont hurt em to rev up that much in a low gear than ....thats good I reckon.

Me too, these motors were designed to live in the high rpm's I think you can actually harm your engine if you continually shift without winding it up. If you don't wind it up you are lugging it. And this can cause damage. I usually wind it up to just before I hit the rev. limiter, at least up to third or fourth gear. Seldom use fifth unless I'm on the Interstate.
if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

Interesting. I have for all practical purposes not yet come close to the rev limiter. It has seemed to me that an shift at 5K produces pretty fair results throughout the power band.
I have yet to go much beyond that.

All my mates live by the same motto
"REV THE F***ER"
That be HD Ducati Jap and Triumph.
Although I do rev mine harder than most of those others.
And our limiter is set way below the real limit of the engine anyhow.

You guys and your revving the snot out of a cast piston engine! YIPES! I heartily suggest a Wiseco forged piston big bore kit for serious rev-ups.

OK, winding it out like that is not something that I do a lot...a handfull of times in the year and a half I've had the bike. Second gear just seems to have a fun power band...goes from 25-50+ easy if you let it...I haven't hit the rev limiter in any other gear. Today's run was more of a test than anything...to check the boost (if any) from the air filter. The opinions really vary on this site about pushing our engines. I guess I like the theory that it likes the high RPMs and that hitting the rev limiter is no big deal.

Just for kicks this morning on my ride into the prison I ran Strongbow up to 50 miles per hour in second gear and of course I coulda gone higher but decided not to. The overwhelming screaming desire to shift overcame me.
Nice ride this morning. No jacket needed just a pair of half gloves and a long sleeve shirt. Summer is kickin into hight gear here in the low desert.

Hah! That's great. I feel semi-responsible for your desire to wind it out a bit. Maybe next time you'll hit the rev limiter. Just for kicks.

No. I have no desire to hit the rev limiter. I tend to agree with Papa Dean in that regard. But, yes thank you.
I rode Strongbow yesterday and purposely kept the revs in what a lot of yall refer to as the sweet zone but no where near the limiter.
It is like riding a different bike when the power band is kept a tad bit hotter across the board. Dont need fifth gear as much. I can see it becoming more a less a highway gear.

I don't know how you do it, I think I hit the rev limiter on the way home from the dealership. She is really coming to life before she hits the rev limiter. That is why I think that if my BA had a rev limiter that went just a couple hundred more R's higher It would be even more of a blast to ride. I do believe that these engines can handle a couple extra R's without damging them. You gotta try it, if only once but then you may become addicted to it!

When I put in my 18T sprocket, which in theory was gonna lower my revs, I found myself winding it out more, just in a lower gear, so now I fly around the back roads in 3rd, and yeah, 5th is a highway gear almost exlusively.

If you refer to my post in this forum called "the proof's in the pudding" I have now added on the end what I should have put first time. When I dragged my mate that day I (in my mind) truly flogged the crap out of my bike. We hit 150kph in 4th! Thats 93.2mph. While some of you may find this worth a yawn, it really surprised me. Out of the four drags we had, my mate hit his rev limiter only once. The next day when I washed my bike, stood back and admired it, I swore to myself that I would never do that again - I love this bike!

Interesting read, I wonder who has with a 18t sprocket hit the limiter in 5th. I run out of nerve before I run out of RPMs.
I nominate 69tri to do the research :-)
I suspect it will run out of horses at about 115 and not hit it.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

I doubt the 18t would make the bike top out any faster than the 17 cause of drag. Unless you can really tuck and maybe have the big bore, then maybe... I ran outa balls around 105

I accept the nomination!! I have a 17 tooth sprocket on her now but I have been wanting to try an 18 tooth for highway riding. I have the big bore installed. I have hit the limiter in 4th gear but I dont think that I have ever hit it in 5th gear. I think before I had the big bore installed I don't think that it would hit the limiter but with the big bore installed it should I would think. One of these days that I am out on a nice road I will have to open her up and see if I can hit the limiter in 5th. I know that many times when I am in 5th I am still reaching for that 6th gear that just never seems to be there I will post results ASAP. Oh and thanks for the nomination
