If any of you could post directions for removing the front wheel it would be greatly appreciated. I need to remove it to get a new tire installed (I'm not installing the tire).

Remove brake caliper or caliper's. Loosen 4 pinch bolts at bottom of fork slider. Remove speedometer cable retaining screw at wheel. Remove speedometer cable by gently pulling and wiggling. Remove axel nut. You will need a 22mm and 12mm hex wrenchs for this. Remove axle. and there you have it. Its off.

That's pretty much it... Take some pics of the process and we'll get it into the vault!

If you loosen the axle first, then loosen the pinch bolts you won't need to hold the left side of the axle. Now about the speedo. What? Simple catch it as you remove the wheel. Let's see if I have a pic. Here's one
You will have to raise the front of the bike way off the ground. Also pay attention to how the speedo drive is oriented.
Edited: My first front wheel removal. The service manual says ya don't have to remove the caliper. Well you don't, but the replacement of the front wheel is way easier if you remove the *#&$^% caliper first!

if you have a bike jack and get it up enough, you won't have to remove the brake caliper(s)...I've heard they can be tough to get off, so I didn't bother, and the rotor will clear when you let the wheel down. One less thing to have to bother about.

The calipers are as easy to remove as an afterthought. What is difficult is trying to align everything up AND get the rotor tween the pads of the mounted caliper. The photo above...I removed the caliper after several attempts at wheel replacement.

Hmmm...I had read a post about someone needing to heat the bolts to get them to loosen up.

Really? I had no such difficulty...mind you, I replaced the pads at the same time and so had pushed the pistons all the way in...the gap between the pads was way big enough to get the rotor in between. No troubles, but every situation can be different, I know.

I had to heat the ROTOR bolts to get them off. Caliper bolts have never been a problem.

I just think its easier to remove the caliper's, than to have to line up all that stuff at once going back. May be easier on the america than my speedmaster. But a fairly easy job on the whole. A lot less trouble than the back wheel which is a real pain going back on with one two hands. An extra set of hands on the back wheel is a real adavantage.

Go easy when reinstalling the speedo cable, it's easy to break the plastic housing iwth a heavy handed phillips screwdriver (from experience....)

Did they change sizes at some point? Mine takes a 19mm and 12mm allen.

19mm...Or a 3/4" allen wrench will work, or the hex head end on a 5/8" spark plug socket.

I wish I had a pic of it somewhere, and it may be mentioned in the tools section of the vault, but I went to the hardware store and found a bolt with a 19mm head on it, then I got two nuts for it and CRANKED them down together. I then use a socket on the nut and stick the head of that bolt in the axle. That way I can use my torque wrench on the whole thing... I could not find a 19 or 12mm allen socket at sears, so I just use a 12mm allen key and the bolt/socket arrangement.

Yeah, it's in the tool vault. A 1/2 inch bolt takes a 3/4 inch wrench. 3/4 inch and 19mm are the same.

I bought a 12mm allen wrench from Sears (about $8), cut about an inch off the long end and use the cut off piece with a 12mm socket. Tah-dah, now you can use your torque wrench too. Much cheaper and easier than trying to find a 12mm hex socket.

Oh yeah, from the "for what its worth" file, Sears part #42976, a 7/8" x 7 1/2" cold chisel, has a hexagon shaped shaft that is exactly 3/4" (19mm). You can slip a box end wrench over the shaft and use the non-chisel end as a hex bit as well. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say.

What are the torque settings to properly tighten all of the fasteners when putting the wheel back on?
