I want to add a 12V accessory socket(cigarette lighter type) for my GPS for a summer trip. I have one from Radio Shack, but it isn't very nice looking. I can install it just for the trip, but was wondering if there is a nice looking socket that can be bought and installed. Who sells them if there is one.

Check out a Marine store...you'll pay more, (because it says "marine" on it) but it will more than likely be stainless and waterproof...

A standard 12v auto socket is too large to fit in the socket fitting under the tank. Auto 12v sockets also do not generally have a locking device to keep the plug attached. The result is that after a bit of vibration, the plug tends to back out. Look for a BMW plug.
If you intend to mount it on the bar and don't mind the plug vibrating out every now and again, it's no big deal.

Triumph sells one and it's "plug and play". It's too expensive, of course, and it takes a BMW style plug, but it mounts to the upper rear engine mount and the harness plug is already there for it.

Grump:I checked out the triumph site and there is no pic of the socket, so I'm not sure if it will work. Where does this hard mount to something?

JJ:The site you sent is great, except that those plugs won't work with the standard cigar lighter plug, which I want to keep because I use this in my cars also. There is one, but it does say it is a BMW type, which I'm not sure will fit the Triumph 'business end' andy ideas? Looks like both male and female are offered.

The triumph one mounts in the hole in the rear engine support bracket, and simply plugs into a socket in the wiring harness. Might be worth considering, and simply get a cigar lighter - BMW type adapter when you want to use the GPS in a car. No point to a GPS if it keeps unplugging itself.

Triumph wants too much mula. I bought mine for $15.95 On this page you can also purchase the bmw to cigarette adapter.

I'm not sure I was clear enough. The GPS has a cigar lighter plug now, all I need is a socket, why would I need a BMW type plug?

I fitted mine when I got the bike (2½ yrs ago) and have never used it!!

Like the others say, it's a BMW size socket but what's the 'looks' problem?
Isn't it tucked away under the tank out of sight?

If you can get a spare power cord for the GPS the easy way is to buy a couple of spade electric connectors and plug them into the socket for the Accesory plug and run the power cord along the frame under the tank to the handle bars so you can just plug into the GPS for power. The socket for the electric plug is hot all the time so you do not have to reboot the Gps every time you cut the engine off.
