Had a "brain fart" yesterday and forgot to put the kickstand down, dropped the bike( easy ). Some fuel leaked out from the carb ( ? )from somewhere, picked the bike up but now wont start, cranks and all the lights work and seems to be getting fuel into the feed line from the petcock. Pulled both plug wires and put an electrical tester in each lead while cranking but no indication of power. Checked the fuses. Dont know what to do next??

P.S., power into the coils but not out to the plugs.

Check all the basic ignition stuff.
Kill switch is on?
Not in gear or clutch is pulled in?
Cycle the kickstand a couple of times and check the connections to the kickstand.
If it worked before, a simple drop shouldn't have done anything to it.

Check the low voltage wires to the coils, see if they're getting voltage. Go through the bike & check connectors.

I have power into the coils but nothing out when I crank it over. I just can't imagine both coils going bad at exactly the same time, right after I dropped the bike then pick it up...strange.

OK then... if it's turning over it's nothing to do with switches like clutch, nuetral, stand etc... and if the coils have power it's not the kill switch or fuses. You're sure that electrical tester's working? The way I test coil output's to put a spare spark plug in the lead and make sure the body's shorted to earth (ie: the engine) while cranking and watch for a spark. If there's definitley no spark I'd be tempted to suspect the igniter or the crank position sensor... or more likely a connector for one of those two.

"You're sure that electrical tester's working?"

I always "test" the tester before using it for a solid ground. as I said I had 12v power in and was gettig about 40 ohms of resistance through the coil(only checked 1 for ohms). I don't know what it should be. If I had any hair I'd pull it out!!

After following the thread, I was remiss when I suggested it may be one of the safety lock-out switches. You did say it was cranking, and the lock-outs do not allow cranking as was noted.

So if it’s turning over, but not firing on ‘both’ sides, there are just a few things it could be. But make darn sure it's not firing or you'll be chasing a non-existing problem.

Think about what could interrupt the ability for both sides to fire.

I suspect it’s not the coils as it would be improbable, but not impossible for both to go bad at once. Maybe a ground common to both coils was knocked loose. If the tank was jarred, it could have contacted something along the spine.

The ‘ignition box’. I don’t know how to check this as a stand-alone component other than replace it with a known good to see if that fixes it. Maybe your shop could check it. Then again, it could be wiring to/from the box.

The magnetic pick-up coil under the right side cover. If the wiring was damaged or it has been knocked out of adjustment in the tipover, you get no spark. The wiring to the mag pick-up is very, very thin. It runs from the right side cover between the carbs to an under seat connector. Get out your trusty multimeter, follow the wire and find the connector, crank it over and check for continuity. If you get continuity jumps, this component is good, at least to the connector.

Run down the wiring diagram. .
It may look complex, but a wire is a wire. If the starter is turning, that should reduce the troubleshooting a bit.

Good luck with it and please post whatever the outcome is.
