I finally got to test drive my bike today. After the short ride, I saw the speedometer wasn't working. I checked the cable and noticed that the end attatched to the brake was melted. Can anyone tell me why? Also, if I replace the cable, will it do it again.

About all I can think of that could do that is a lot of friction at that point. Maybe the cable broke or kinked near the lower end. Disect the old cable and see if you can figure out what happened, and make sure that the new one and the speedometer turn freely.

Strick, I took my front whell off to take it to the dealer for new rubber. When I was sitting in the garage having a well earned coldy, I saw that the speedo cable (just hanging) had leaked a clear fluid on the floor. It was clear and slippery - oil!
Where the cable terminates on the hub, there must be a seal of sorts, or this oil would have gone ages ago. As your bike has been off the road for a while, you cable may have run dry. Did you have the cable disconnected for any length of time?
