Anybody ever come across a product for carrying extra gas on the bike for those long hauls where you might exceed 4.4 gallons before the next petrol station? Other than mounting jerry cans where the saddlebags would mount, I would imagine that there is something out there in motorcycle land. Something safe that holds an extra gallon or so... Strapping a 5 gallon plastic gas can on the luggage rack or pillion pad is not what I'm looking for..... I Googled this idea awhile ago and thought there was something out there, but after re-Googling this evening I didn't find anything but fuel cells and camper stoves....

A couple of years ago J&P cycle had a extra gas tank that mounted to your handlebars and looked like a leather sleeping bag. It`s not in there any more so i don`t know if they quit caring it or the company quit making it.It was around $400 if i remember right.

grump,
I have one of those aluminum backpackers fuel containers that can be used for about 1/2 gallon in the largest size. They are pretty cheap and very sturdy. Don't know if this helps, but even a quart or so can get you to the next gas station in an emergency. (Like when you go on a trip and forgot to take it off reserve. Doh.)
Backpackers Fuel Container
Google under "Fuel Bottle" to get lots of good links too.

My wife keeps telling me I have plenty of extra.... Oh, sorry. Wrong topic.

Pat, I saw those during my search but didn't know if they'd be suitable for gasoline. Thanks. The item piper found looks like a good idea also, but I don't speak the language....

Grump, Please don't tell me you're shootin' for the Iron Butt award. I suggest an old guy like yourself stop and refuel frequently unless you've got Depends to go with your extra fuel. Hey, maybe 2 cup holders rivoted to your helmet and some 1/4" tubing like those beer can beach hats. Two sixteen ouncers ought to get you a few extra miles between stops. I can just picture you scootin' down the road like a human Molitov (sp)cocktail.

Barry, I'm having enough trouble with my rusted spine without worrying about an Iron Butt... I just thought it would be a good thing to carry a little extra fuel for those trips through the mountains where I have no idea where I am or where I'm going... It would also be a nice thing to have when you come upon someone else who may have run out of gas... the old "good kharma" thing. I enjoy finding roads I've never been on before, and sometimes you can go a loooong way before you find a gas station. I don't want to call the wife on the cel phone and say "Come and bring me some gas, I don't know where I am, but I'm 200 miles away".. And as for Depends, I prefer the crazy homeless look, it keeps people away...

refried beans?
actually, not a bad idea. out in western neb. i've come close to running empty where the gas stations are very scarce. once, in a car, i ran out of gas and had to walk to a farmer's place and ask for gas. they usually help a person out.

Grump, I know what you mean. It gets a little edgy at times. One day last year while leaving Johnstown I hit reserve just as I crested the hill above the town. I had no idea there wasn't another station until Latrobe. I made it - but I still don't know how. Barry

Grump, No problem using the fuel bottles for gasoline. They are made for white gas and are leak/corrosion proof. The good thing about them is how safe they are. You can drop them, smack them and bounce them all you want as long as you don't puncture them. They are pretty sturdy aluminum and can take a beating and weigh next to nothing. There are some that are as large as 1/2 gallon, which is just enough to get you about another 20 miles.

I used to carry a little 2 gal. heavy plastic gerry can where I lived in southern UT. It was 50 miles to the nearest premium "leaded" pump. If I remember correctly most of the older Triumphs (new Triumphs then) recommended high test. It came loose somewhere along state highway 211 in July 1980 if anyone's looking.
The camp stove bottle idea is a good one. As Grump said, if nothing else it could help out a stranded biker.

A few years ago I was searching ebay for parts for my ironhead sporster. I found an accessory fuel tank that mounted to a tall sissy bar. It was chrome and about 3" x 9" at the bottom and tapered to about 3" x 5" at the top. had a standard harly style gas cap on top and a petcock on the bottom in the corner. Deffinetly a product of the 60's or 70's. But you could have an aluminum tank fabbed up and chromed and mount to your sissy bar.

Pete,
During my search I came across a site that makes auxiliary tanks for HD's and Wingabagos. These are meant to be plumbed into the fuel lines to extend the range of the bike. While that's not exactly what I'm looking for, you've given me an idea... Something to hold a little extra gas mounted under the sissy bar rack.... I'll add that to my list of possible projects. Thanks...

Grump, I like your thinking here of a little extra onboard fuel. I go north in PA and just fallow the compass and paranoia will usually keep me safe but a little extra would really be nice. I like Pat's idea, that could go right in the saddlebag.

A couple of Army surplus canteens will get one a 1/2 gal. of gas. New ones are plastic, and the old, collectable ones are aluminum. And they come with a nice, OD green canvas pouch, suitable for mounting most anywhere.

Grump, have been there before (middle of nowhere). Cruising down the Pennyrile parkway in Kentucky, when I hit reserve, and 40 some miles or more to the next big town, so I hit an exit for some boondock town, and was riding and riding, and seeing nothing but tobacco sheds as far as the eye could see. Finally turned around and went the other direction (there were no signs at the exit to say which way to turn) to see if I'd have better luck, and finally rolled into town on my last vapors (the pump stopped between 4.3 and 4.4 gallons!!) Next time, I'll top up as soon as I hit the Kentucky state line...

Greg, I haven't got that low yet, but I plan on doing a bit more riding this coming season and I thought a "reserve" reserve might be a good idea.... I just ordered 2 of the bottles that Pat mentioned. I'm gonna get them chromed..........
