Is it that freaking hard to make a phone that just makes calls? I went ot my local phone store yesterday. They had phones that you can check your email on, some with some green teeth, no I am sorry blue tooth or some crap like that. Some that played MP3's some that played videos, oh and all have a camera in them.. Lets see if I want to take a pic I will use my camera, if I want ot listen to a MP3 I will use my IPOD, if I want to watch a video I will pop one in the DVD player.. Hell I chekc my email every 2 or so days, I dont needo t chek it every 5 min from my phone.. I dont want to talk to anyone that much.. So needless to say I left the store with my old phone.. As in a motorla flip phone no camera, no internet, no video, no MP3's just a phone.. Now I do text message a good bit.. But I dont need any of that other stuff.. How about yall?

Haven't found a good enough reason to have one yet. Certaintly don't need to be reached at a moments notice.

Couldn't agree more. Making calls and sending text msgs is enough for me. My phone has got the little crappy camera, but I never use it.

I've got just a regular Nokia 6010. Making phone calls is about all it does. It does text messaging too, but I don't. I don't need it to do anything else. I have a nice digital camera for pictures and an mp3 player for music. So, I have a phone to make phone calls on.

Fraid I'm a geek... my phone does everything. I use the computer to xfer mp3's to my phone's memory card via bluetooth, listen to them with the handsfree kit, and occasionally take pics with the crappy camera (if I've forgotten my real cam). Am considering buying a bluetooth headset that fits in the helmet, cept I really don't want to answer calls on the bike, I just want to have a wireless intercom. Oh and the phone's also my diary & alarm clock (I have a job that sometimes allows me to sleep on company time, must have alarm clock! ). I don't do the net-on-the-phone thing, but that's only coz it's stuidly expensive here. Sometimes I even make phonecalls on my cellphone too!

I'm a 21st century digital boy.

Well maybe you're not such an old fart after all, Matt!

ditch_dr, the problem is that cell phone companies are not marketing to you and me. They design and build products for the younger crowd. I know this because I work for Motorola and I see the focus of their efforts on a daily basis. The drive is to pack as many voice, data, & media related features into the smallest package that is ergonomically feasible. Hence, all the crap we see. You will never again be able to purchase a simple cell phone. btw, the market is eating this stuff up! Case in point, check out the Motorola SLIVR

I am a Communications Professional (snicker) and my phone has the ability to make calls and receive calls. That is if I decide to turn the S.O.B. on. The majority of the time I leave it on the nightstand when I go to work and it stays there until I go for a ride. I always carry it on the bike in case of emergency. Of course, it is turned off. Hopefully, if I ever need it I'll have the time and consciousness to turn it on and dial.

i used mine the other day when my bsa fried a coil. i was in a bad part of town and the vultures were hovering. 2 old bikers happened by in a painting van and gave me a number to a bike towing service.

i really couldn't leave the bike, so the phone came in handy.

i had a hard time reading my saved numbers though in the bright light and i didn't have my reading glasses with me. curses.

i don't use mine much and forget to turn it on but there are cheap only-call phones. mine is a virgin mobile.

In my case, I never learnt in the first place

I never leave the house with out my cell phone. It has a camara, video, web access, email, message text, games, mp3 music, can download music and videos and whole bunch more stuff. It came with a DVD on how to operate the thing. Of course, i have no idea how to use it. I keep it only so my wife and the childrens daycare teachers can get hold of me at any time.

I often wonder. What did we all do before mobile phones came along.

A cell phone that makes/answers calls? Unheard of! Blasphemy!
I have such a thing, but it seems to be the last of its kind. I just did a search on it and they only offer camera/mp3/etc phones now. I think it's an Islamic plot to make us kill each other off by driving under the influence.
By the way, I only switch the bloody thing on maybe once a month or two when I have to take the subway and bus home to let the OL know when to come get me.

Don't got one. Don't want one!

I can see the use of having a call only phone on the bike ICE. Other than that I have managed to survive in this world without one. Every now and then I need to carry one for work when I travel. Made the boss buy a company phone that I use. I always get a kick out of people whining that business calls are costing them money. Don't use your personal phone then ya yahoo. Problem solved.

Ive used the camera on my phone a fair bit.

Always found it handy when I didn't have my digital camera with me. OK they all take pretty crappy photos but its handier than not having one.....

Hmmm that reminds me, its time to upgrade again.....

now a phone that is at least splash proof and doesn't get filled with pocket dust....does one exist?

hmmm funny line to follow

I have a plain jane cell phone that I carry on the bike, but it's turned off most of the time. Came in handy on Saturday when I helped out a downed rider. The only other cell phone on the scene had problems getting a signal, but my phone worked.

The only thing on my bike to carry anything most of the time is a little tool roll. By the time I stick a bottle of water in it, there isn't any room for much more so a camera built into the cell phone would be nice to have...especially when you're at a bikini bike wash like I was Saturday afternoon.

The only reason I have a cell phone is my wife insisted, as a matter of fact, gave it to me for my bday because she wanted to make sure I could call her if I had any problems on my bike rides. God forbid anything happens I only hope I have the ability to use it in such an instance. Now, I have had to use it when I was getting the kinks out of a 75 xs that I have been playing with (come and get with the P.U.). Other than that, if they want me they can get me at home.

I'm thinking about mounting a Direct TV satelite dish on my luggage rack, so I can watch TV while I'm riding my bike.

Hey Doc,
My sentiments exactly. JUST GIVE ME A PHONE I CAN TALK TO SOMEONE ON!!! If I need a GPS, I'll get one. I've got several cameras - I don't need to take photos on a phone. I don't need to download music on a phone.
The dude at Cingular told me, when I asked for a monochrome screen that they were a thing of the past.
I told him that there is no color screen that is visible in sunlight, he said, "Why do you need to see it in sunlight?" HELLO?
TextMessaging? Get a life!!!
Just give me a phone!
PLEASE PULL OVER TO ANSWER YOUR PHONE, no one has enough sense to talk on a phone while operating a motor vehicle.

This is the era we live in.
I have a friend who has her own small travel agency. She receives VIDEO's of destinations for demonstrations. She has them playing on TV's in the shop non-stop. (Should be DVD's, but all she gets are videos) I went out to buy her a new "BASIC" VCR. Just one that plays video tapes - that's all. You just can't do it. They all have features as long as your arm. Features she'll NEVER use but has to pay for.
Take the challenge, ask at the next TV retailer you're at for a BASIC VCR!
Same as trying to get a basic CELL PHONE (that doesn't look like Noah used it to call in all the animals two by two)

I heard recently about a phone that was coming out which was aimed at the corner of the market where people just want to make and receive calls and text messages.

It was primarily aimed at the .. how do I put this .. more mature user!!

My phone has most of the bells and whistles and after the initial novelty value, they rarely get used ..

Tom,
I thought seriously about a jammer. Then I got to thinking what all the airheads around me in traffic would do when they lost their signal? Look at their phone, start pushing buttons, look through their directory. SCARY!
