I want to replace my shocks and am going back and forth between these two. My main concern is to improve the ride.....smooth it out over bumps. I am not a performance type rider so I am not concerned with cornering or any of that. I just want a smoother ride without bottoming out over big bumps. And a shock that will handle 2 up as well. Thoughts anyone?
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger......and then it hit me.

Heavy duty Progressive 412s from Phat Performance Parts. They're $198.95 with free shipping. I especially notice a better ride with my wife on board. I set the shocks at 1 or 2 for solo riding, and 2 or 3 when she's on the bike.

I'm very happy with my Hagons (full shroud). They work extremely well together with the Progressive fork springs. Others aren't as happy. I remember member ssjones tried a pair but returned them and got himself a pair of Progressive instead.

That's a good price on the 412's. Am I correct in assuming that the America and Speedy take the same shocks? For that price I think I'll opt for the 412's.

Yep, same shocks fit both Speedmasters and Americas. They have it listed that way, because I called them asking if they carried the specific 412 part number after they didn't have it on their site. After my enquiry, they posted that page with Speedmaster under it.

Very good. Thanks Sal. And to all that replied. But I have one more question. Would the heavy duty ones be O.K. for an average size rider like myself? Or should I go with a standard rate spring?

Well I'm about 225 lbs, and my wife is another 145. If you're a lot lighter than that, then I'd just go with the regular Progressives. Like I said, I ride with the shocks set at 1 or 2, and with the wife at 2 or 3. That's why I bought the heavy duty ones, because I ride 2 up quite a bit now.
I would think the Ikons would be better, but that's just based on price. If you're going to spend that much the Progressive 440s are worth a look. Lots of positive reviews around here for those.

The Hagon's allowed my pipes to scrape in low speed corners riding two-up with the wife. Ditched them for Progressive 440's. The Hagon's Classics aren't much better than stock IMO. The Hagon experiment cost me about $80 in return fees/shipping.

I beleive a lot of the guys are ordering the 440s from MAW. My 412 heavy duty shocks were cheaper at Phat Performance Parts, and they had free shipping. Might want to give Phat Performance a call(Toll Free Sales: 866-739-PHAT (7428). Even though their price for the 440s is $399.95 vs 388.95 from MAW, MAW charges shipping AND a handling fee of 4%. Phat ships free any order over $99.

440-4214B (B is for "black"), think the C is for chrome. That is for stock ride height.

Derek - thanks for the lead - good price and fast service. Bolted them on today and life is good!

Glad to hear they took care of you Jeff. Post up your impressions after you get a few miles on them. Mine seem to be loosening up a bit after about 6,000 miles on them. I set them at 2 for solo and 4 for 2 up now. If anything, they're getting better at absorbing the bumps.

can anyone give any advice regarding 11.5 inch shocks vs the use of possible 11 inch shocks. Such as looks, any type of handling problems, etc.

FYI, y'all...Phat's price is now up to $250 shipped on the 412's. Still pretty tempting.

Has anyone put the 412 shocks from Phats on any Americas later than 2002? That is all the description for the website says that they will fit.

Yup. Put 412's on my '05. Fit perfectly. Very nice ride as well.

The 11.5 Pro's worked great for me as I lowered the front 2". Leveled the bike out nice. There is no option of using 440's if you are going to lower the bike. Just check the tec vault for part numbers. The ride is excellent.

Derek - just got back from a 2000 mile trek to the Ozarks and I think I would have to agree that they seem to loosen up with time.....I don't really know what I expected when I bolted them on except I wanted a smoother (less squeky) ride. The ride down didn't really feel much different - riding solo with gear, shocks at 2. We took I-35 thru Minnesota and Iowa to make time and the potholes were still pretty harsh.
Several times on ride down I thought to myself - remember to try different shock settings! But of course that was long forgotten after the day's ride.
The trip home did seem smoother, but it also seemed alot longer!!

I got mine for the $198.95 at the end of July........you know, the same thing happened after I bought my Corbin seat....I see a pattern here - anyone else know of killer web pricing on goodies so I can ruin it for the rest of ya??

Hey Jeff, The trip home always seems a lot longer. I understand what you're saying about the 412s. I think they're much better than the stockers when running hard through the twisties, and they made a significant difference for me when 2 up with my wife, but for everyday cruising around town, I don't see a big improvement over stock. But I had 36,000 miles on my stock shocks when i bought the 412s, so I knew they probably wouldn't last much longer, and I didn't have the cash for the 440s. The 440s, from all reports in here, are about the best shock you can get for our bikes.

The bike really handled well in the twisties. The only thing holding it back was my FEAR! I have never seen so many corners in my life!
I am approaching 9000 miles on my TBA and the Bridgestone's are nearing their life expectency - I kinda wish I had sprung for new tires before this run....this is off topic but the tires held me back a bit in my confidence.
So - to summarize - we do not have twisties in my neck of the woods that can even began to compare with the Ozarks, so I am probably not the best judge........It was a really good time though...........

Just ask Becky how much difference the switch from the Bridgestones to the Avon Venoms made with her riding. To me she looked like she gained 10 years of riding experience when I was behind her through the curves up Mingus Mountain. If you want long life out of your tires, get the Metzler 880s. Not as sticky as the Venoms, but still a big improvement over the Bridgestones from the reports in here. I run the 880s front and back and I like them. Good enough for me and the way I ride(7/10).

Hey Loco, Glad to hear you liked our roads!!!!! I put lowered 412's on this year and they are a big improvement over stock. My wife weighs about 150 and she likes the #2 setting. The bike still wallows a little in the twisties but not scary like the originals. If I had it to do over I would pop for the 440's.

Tony - The roads were awesome - took highway 125 notrh out of Arkansas across the ferry and on to Missouri - WOW! Crazy Scary Road!
In Arkansas they post the speed for every corner - in Missouri, they leave it up to you to figure it out!
