Does anyone know where the hell the rev limiter is located? tried the dealer they don't know, and it's not in their wiring diagrams. NO i'm not disconecting i just need to know where the wires run. Top Secret Project.

If it can't be bought, I'll make it. If it can be bought i'll make it anyway!

The rev limiter is part of the ignition control unit.

yes it's a sealed unit, i need to know which wires lead to and from the limiter inside its self.does anyone have a service diagram they can look at. the dealer mechanics can't even read one. they gave us the wrong legend not once but twice! i'm done with them. I don't think a battery symbol is the same as a turn signal.

Try e-mailing jojje. Here's his webpage with contact info. He's been doing revlimiter mods for a few years now, but won't do them for those of us in the USA due to liability issues. Also, he hasn't had success getting the increased revlimiter to work on the 270 engines. Outside of a Triumph engineer, I don't think anybody else in the world knows more about our igniter boxes than him.

It's an integral part of the ignition unit. One way it might work amounts to a counter that increments when the signal from the crank position sensor comes in. There is a timer that periodically trensfers the count to a register and resets the counter. The contents of the register is then compared to a magic number in the read only memory and, if it's equal or greater than the magic number, the next spark pulse is skipped.
The other way they might be using is to measure the time it takes to get some number of pulses from the sensor. With this, the computer clock is run into a counter and the ignition pulses into another. When you get the right number of pulses, the content of the clock counter is tested and, if it is less than the magic number the next spark is skipped. Because of the offset in the crank, I would think they would have to count at least 3 timing pulses to make this work. From the sound of the engine when you hit the limit, I think this is the system they are using. The other method usually runs so long between being cut off, it can damage the engine anyway. Did you see that video of he fool that ran over himself doing a burnout with a BMW cage? Sounded more like water in the gas than a proper rev limiter.

Has anyone replaced a BA ignition control unit for a Speedmaster control unit? This will give us a little more R's and if so was it worth the switch. I believe the ignition control units are a little expensive so would this be a worthwhile mod? Does anyone know how much an ignition control unit goes for? Any thoughts on this?????

The service manual states that all rev limiter's are set at 7400 including speedmasters. Some say their's are higher but i think its more likely there tach's are off.

I had to replace my Speedmaster igniter box a couple of months ago when my bike started firing on only one cyclinder. A new one from Triumph, with an 8,000 rpm rev limit labled on the package, set me back $550 from Palm Beach Triumph. I ordered from them because I knew they'd be one of the quickest to get it to me. Took about 4 or 5 days for them to recieve it, then another 4 or 5 days for me to get it by UPS ground.

During my troubleshooting of the problem, Dwight was kind enough to send me his America igniter so I could verify the problem before forking out all that cash. It fixed my problem, so if you have any doubt that they wouldn't work between models, I can't see why. It'd be best though to wait to see what Procom comes out with. Brent sells Procom igniters for the Bonneville and they're only $189. Procom said back in March they should have an igniter for our bikes in 2 months. Times up so maybe they're getting close.
