Wow, I don't believe I finally have the America at a shop, with all the parts. Alex in Bethany, dropped the bike off this morning. Now lets see what Alex can do with the bike. Needs the following: Change rear brake caliper and entire brake line for the rear brake system. From the caliper to the foot peddle brake line. Rear brake caliper and mounting plate Chain and sprockets if needed. Alex noted the rear sprocket has good teeth depth to it and may not need to be changed, Alex will checkout the front sprocket, for depth of teeth. Motorcycle makes a clanking sound when one would start moving the bike from start to speed. There is a rhythmic noise coming from the area of the chain and sprocket, in the rear. I told Alex I am putting my life in his hands with the care of my motorcycle. Maybe I can finally ride sometime around the end of next week. I SURE HOPE SO!!!

Do yourself a favor and get a good X ring chain and steel sprockets. Now, this part is controversial. I used go back and forth with Big Bill about this. I stopped lubing my chain and it is lasting much longer. My theory is with an X ring chain the lube is locked in the chain and oil can't get in when applied. All oil does is attract dirt and act as an abrasive to wear the sprockets. So in my opinion, do not lube an X ring or O ring chain. I found this by mistake, my old chopper had a 66 TR6C engine in it and the breather blew oil on the chain so I never lubed it. When I got the SM I didn't oil it because I didn't think about it out of habit and it is still on there with no oil. If you use a standard chain the it will need oil since you have no seal to keep lube in and when oiled lube can get in because there is no seal to keep oil (or dirt) out.

The_Dog33, Wow differences in approach to lubing or not lubing X or O ring chains. When I purchased the America in 2006 sales man noted to lube chain every 350 miles. I oil the chain every 800 miles using synthetic chain oil, spray it right on. But I get your point about built up oil with lots of sand in the mix all over the chain guard and rear tire rim. Wearing down the sprockets and chain.

I agree, no point in trying to lube an X ring chain. If you are getting lube into the links then the chain is shot and more lube will not get you much more life out of it.
I used to use the spray wax but that makes a mess and collects debris because it is sticky.

Same, only difference is the X ring has 2 sealing surfaces and O ring only 1. As far as a sales man, he is just that, a salesman not a mechanic. He is repeating what he is told and the people telling him want to sell lube and chain sets etc.. and he himself wants to sell.

I did the no lube for two years and did not notice any appreciable wear as a result. Fortnine has a good video about lubing chains and their opinion is a little gear oil is the best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnPYdcbcAe0 I use it very sparingly mostly to hide the look of a rusty chain.
