I am in the process of selling a family heirloom that was given to me some years back as an investment. A third party is doing research and is going to be the middle man in any transaction, as he has worked on internet sales and research before. But this object is a little outside his experience, hence, the research. Said object is potentially worth many thousands of dollars. We are going to an "antiqueties" show in a few weeks and he is in contact with the Smithsonian Institute to get some more information. The object would fit in a shoe box. Here's my question; how should I best conduct a safe transaction of such an object? Maybe I've seen too many movies but it is the kind of thing that could be "snatched" and run. I keep it in a safe deposit box and the third party is a layer of safety for me, but at some point I will have to hand it over and take some money for it. Any advice from my "brain trust" on here?

I'd suggest you do your own research as well. Also, make sure you can trust your third party seller. I do the same thing for a buddy of mine, I sell his vintage junk online and take a cut. He could have the American Pickers to his place for an episode

Is there some sort of Escrow-type-thing that would work? Or a lawyer that could act as middle man?
Holly crap! Did I just come up with a business opportunity here?! Some untapped market where I turn up in a security van thingy and each party puts the cash / item on a sort of ... revolving turntable setup! And it spins round when both people and the "middle man" (that would be me) all agree !! There could be coffee and donuts too. And free wifi !!
It was my idea. I came up with it first ...

Is your middleman bonded?
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.
