All gave some, some gave all. God bless every one of those brave souls.

I have in my possession a foot locker, boots, medals, 8 x 10 service photo from WW2. His family did not want these items and were about to discard them. SMH
I had the opportunity to talk with this man a few times before he passed. With deep sadness he told me a story about getting very ill one evening and spending the night in the infirmary. His squad flew out on a mission the next morning without him. None of them survived. He told me he didn't understand while he was still here and ask me if I knew why he lived to be an old man. I was stunned, the only thing I could tell him was he was here to tell his story so the world would never forget. He met his sweetheart in London and they were married. He brought her back to America where they lived for 60 years. I also had the pleasure of meeting and talking with his wife before her passing. She was indeed a sweetheart. Thank you SGT Sharp for you service to our country and the world. RIP sir

Sad and hard to believe. Todays generation, I'm sorry to say. Very little sentimentality or respect for the past. In a similar vein, I have my clothes in a walnut wooden dresser that was hand made by my carpenter great, great grandfather for his daughter's wedding gift in 1878. When I try and explain why this piece of furniture means a lot, my kids shake their heads and don't get it. I suppose when I pass it will go to the dump.

As I type this at my bedroom desk my foot is resting on my father's WWII footlocker. It's a standard issue olive drab footlocker painted blood red. The top has a white P-38 Lighting stenciled on it. One side has "LT. C.F. "Mac" McConnell USAAF, in care of Innis McConnell and then his parent's home address". The other side has a large hand painted squadron emblem, a large 5th AF emblem, a Nationalist Chinese shield, last but not least the survival script with Chinese writing and an American flag. All hand painted like fuselage art, many friends over the years suspected they were decals.
In the trunk are my father's medals, patches, career flight logs, citations and hundreds of photos of my family before I was born. Most photos are from occupation Japan, my sister three years older was born there in 1948. I have treasured this for six decades.
In thinking of Normandy and regardless how you feel about our President you should read the transcript of Trump's speech. It's second only to Reagan's and it's moving. The Greatest Generation's courage and sacrifice is humbling. God bless.

On this day and Nov 11th I go downstairs and look at the portrait of my uncle my dads brother and thank him for what he gave.
CBC was broadcasting live from the ceremonies its the only thing I listened to today. I just listened to Trumps speech, very moving.

How many fields are full of 18 year olds? These boys, er MEN where members of the ‘us or we’ generation. When family ties god and patriotism was a tenant in day to day life. True heros these men where and always will be regardless of how this ‘throw away’ generation discounts them. But by their honor do we walk free today. Hats off to all informed service members both Leo’s and all military.
Let’s get this through our thick skulls, when we die all our ‘stuff’ will be trashed. Rare are the times when ones paramount life treasures are treated as keepsakes. Thanks Mike, for being a rare example!
