I'm feeling a little excited.I just ordered a 2019 Bonnevile SM today.Different Bars and Mirrors and a tank paint job being done.Corbin seat is next. I am keeping the 07 for now and I've got the Kawa for Thailand.

The new Speedy is very different from the older model, I’ll be interested in your thoughts after you ride it a bit.

I haven't picked it up yet,I hope to get it before I go overseas. If I do I wont have a chance to ride it much but when I get back I'll let you know .I had a minute test ride in Thailand and I loved the power but I've already ordered a Corbin from Rapid Edward and I'm having the bars changed at the dealers.

There's a delay in recieving the new SM.They had to order one from Melbourne apparently and it's not here yet!."Probably Monday"It'll take about four days to paint.Changing the bars and mirrors only a few hours.Anyway I leave for 3 months on the 6th of May.I am talking with them to hold the bike until I get back.Take their time with the paint and do a good job.Register and start the warranty in 3 months and have it delivered then, rather than try to rush. We will see .It's paid for so I own one, just have to get one! I was out on my America today and it cruises SO well.Far faster than the police like you to .I don't really need a new SM but .......

Have to agree with you about how well Americas cruise - they’re about as close to a do-it-all bike as I’ve owned in 50 years of owning road bikes. My last speeding ticket attests to the America’s ability “to go far faster than the police would like you to.” I was having so much fun passing all those Harleys, until I saw the cop...

Stop it right now! It's bad enough that I'm drawn to look at ads for America's again without you folks reminding me just how good they are. All I need now is for my Beloved to spot this ....she's always wittering on at me for selling the last one.
I took the Road Less Travelled.
Now where the ****** am I?

Well the scene is set.The bike will be prepared as ordered and kept at the dealers until I come back. It'll then be registered, the warranty extended 3 months, and delivered. It's the best outcome really as the new SM would have just been delivered and before I could put any Kms on it.it would be put to bed for 3 months.

Paul I have a couple of questions about your new bike. How come you are getting a new paint job? Was it lack of availability of a color you liked? Just want a custom job?
Also are the stock “beach bars” too wide for you?
And finally after having an America so many years do you find the SM on the small side when you ride it? Thx

Good questions! I sure like the looks of the new speedys. I got on one and it seemed a little cramped for me; still, if I had the dough...

The beach bars put my wrists at exactly the wrong angle for my damaged tendons so I'm having bars from a newer model America put on. The paint is a custom thing for me.I'll put a pic on BAs Facebook page when I pick it up,in 3 months. It is definitely a more compact bike than ours but the motor is wonderful. They should have put that in our bikes and I wouldn't be buying this one.but as I say I'll have both so all's good.I'd say the new SM would be better in heavy traffic or tight spaces. When I ride my 650 Vulcan it seems to make the America archaic as will the new SM no doubt but one old school and one new should be interesting.

Me too Paul!.I just got a call to say it's arrived and will be uncrated tomorrow morning .Then off to the painters with the tank ,Bars and Mirrors.A corbin through Fast Eddy and it will be good to go [hopefully] I still wont pick it up until the end of July when I get back from overseas but the dealer will e-mail me pics of how it's progressing.

Speaking of these new bikes, with ride by wire, clutch assist etc. How's the engine braking? I keep reading there's very little to any on the new 1200's. Can anyone confirm this?

I just asked, Amy (the wife) about how her Speedy 1200 reacts to down shifting. Her reply is it responds similar to her TBA 790, taking in account of the differences in gear ratios, engine size and different transmissions.

I feel like it’s quite similar, maybe not quite as much braking as the 790 engine but that could also be the five speed tranny. The drive-by-wire throttle does take some practice as the computer is significantly faster than closing the butterfly on a carb and that can cause uneven running on the wind down. You really feel it in town especially if you get on an all red light pattern.

A couple of articles I've read mentioned the use of a Booster Plug https://www.boosterplug.com/shop/frontpage.html to relieve throttle snatchy-ness. I have used the Booster plug on a 2010 Tbird and felt it did exactly what it was supposed to do. Additionally modifying motorcycles is what a lot of us do, we like to tinker and can't seem to leave well enough alone. Guilty as charged Apparently if you decat the 1200 and install a crossover pipe this will improve throttle response and mpg's as well as reduce heat but affect engine braking negatively.

There is some deals to be had on the 2018 SM here. They have a black and white one for $10,999 at the OKC dealership. https://www.eurotek-okc.com/default.asp?...r=xNewInventory

Glad I read your post Mike.I was thinking of the x over pipe but I'll rethink it now.On the extremely short test ride I had I didn't find the throttle too snatchy as I remember but we'll see.
