I posted something on the Tbird forum but it occurs to me that folks here might know. I'm planning a ride next year from UK to Malta....reasonably straightforward but does anyone have any experience of the ferry trip from Rome to Palermo in Sicily? Cheers all.

I have done it twice. If I recall correctly, it is around 14-15 hours. If I can help with info, fire away. Why don't you ride down? It is less than 1000 kms to Palermo from Rome and a 20 minute ferry ride from mainland Italy to Messina in Sicily. Unless you want to see Palermo, you can then go straight from Messina to Pozzalo for your ferry ride to Malta (the ferry ride is a couple of hours). Just my opinion, but to me the east coast of Sicily is way more interesting (Catania, Syracuse etc.).

Thanks... I was wondering if maybe you were familiar with this route. We might well ride down from Rome...at present I'm negotiating with my wife about that. I haven't ridden in Italy before...how good/ bad are the roads from Rome? Messina to Pozzallo looks a good idea too. Thanks again...I will post again with questions if that's ok. Cheers Al

The E45 heading south is just fine bar 2 or 3 very short streches where it narrows a bit. The coastal portion south of Cosenza (where the main square is called JFK) all the way down is superb. What you see of Italian coastal roads in movies. Beware of long fingers if you stop off in Naples. Don't leave a jacket hanging off a backrest and keep hand bags in front of you ... not side. On the highways try cruise in right lane as the Italians are very agressive and impatient. Don't negotiate with your good lady. Just tell her you are getting on in age (it doesn't matter how old you are) and that you may never have the opportunity to go down this part of the world again ... and then sigh repeatedly. Haha!

Thanks again...still negotiating but the odds are not in my favour. We're going with another couple and they are keen to cut the mileage and use the ferry...but it's a long time till we go ( September next year) so plenty of time to negotiate. In some ways I understand....I'm 65 and they are all the same age range roughly..I ride a lot, the rest less so. I do like to plan in advance....which is why my questions now...that and taking advantage of booking as early as possible.
