As a prior happy America 790 owner, I'm thinking of adding an 865 Speedmaster to the stable. Are there any issues with the early (2005) models that I should be aware of?

Yeah, your wife will question why you need TWO motorcycles! But if push comes to shove, stick with the CYCLES!

Can't think of any in particular...you might also strike lucky and find an 05 with the modified crank breather box=starter boss sorted.Ive seen one or two of these rare beasts myself.

I have a friend with a 2005 TBA...790 but with the modified breather box. I've seen 2005 TBAs advertised here as 865.... so I don't think the cut off between 780/865 was exactly clinical... possibly mix and match what parts they had most of?

Oh OH! I didn't know. (Already have 2... looking for a third!!)
BTW, America was 790 through 2006, but Speedy went to 865 in 2005. Carbed into 2008 & then EFI mid '08 on.

Look on the left side of the engine( as if you're sitting on the bike). Where the breather pipe emerges at the top of the engine case. If the pipe just comes straight out of there it's the earlier version. If you can see a box shaped housing it's the later one.

Also meant to say....there have been A Very Few cases where folks have had serious problems with the earlier set up... usually caused by a weak battery which hammers the starter solenoid repeatedly and can thus snap off a boss in the inner case ....very expensive....but I repeat, very rare...and if you do have an early version there is a mod which takes care of the problem ..see " Safe Start" ....

I always thought the failure of the starter boss was due to backfiring while cranking the bike over. The boss can't take the load. Triumph Twin Power sells a reinforcement kit to rectify this weak spot.

Yes, I'm prepared to concede that..though I've personally seen a few 2005's with the new uprated breather box.....And a wee bit of me still thinks I've seen an 05 865.... Nurse, pass my meds.
