There is a copper gasket that goes between the header and jug. You will know if it goes bad you will start getting back firing as it sucks in air. My 03 just started popping and last night I found where it was leaking at the header/jug end. Only a couple of bucks each for them.

Update, just replaced the header gasket a bit ago...I was right, and AMAZED, it was leaking around the gasket is why I was getting popping and backfire. There was only half of the gasket left (after 50,000 miles) Will see if I can get an image to load of the comparison old vs new.
