Just a thought.....I know some folks have got big mileage from TBA,s......but.....what have people needed to fix/ replace in the long run ?
Stuff such as consumables( tyres brakes clutches etc) I take as read.
So what else goes?

On the older models I've heard of a starter idler gear breaking it's mounting boss in the case, never happened to me. I've also heard of coil and brain box failures, again not mine. That,s all I've got.

I do not have that many miles on mine, but it seem I read a lot about loosing spark to one cylinder. I am thinking about installing a TTP Firestarter and blue flame coils. Just to be safe.

2005 America. Bought new in 2006, the bike lasted me 74,000 miles. Today it sits in the garage, as I can't trust the bike to even take me 5 miles before it begins to lose power, spitting and sputtering through one(or both) of the cylinders, and eventually dying on the side of the road. I've spent WAY too much money on the thing already in labor costs, parts, and frustration loading the bike in the back of a truck or trailer after having someone to come and get me. Everything has either been replaced or swapped out, all to no avail. Suspect something internal of the engine.
It's been a great bike though, as I have thoroughly enjoyed the miles that it HAS given me. We've been to several states, rally's, rainstorms, and fabulous times together with lots of fond memories...As for now, the bike sits, waiting for me to make a decision on whether to part it out, or just get what I can for it. It's at the point that if it ever does get repaired, I feel like it will just be one thing after another. Sad but true, this time comes for ALL vehicles.

50 K on mine when I sold it, never a single replacement part other than tires and plugs. Most reliable bike I ever owned! (Which I can't say about my Indian, which cost 4 times as much!)

That's one reason I asked the question.... I've had three TBA,s and not a single problem on any of them.
I know about the starter gear problem .....solved by a redesign in 05 ( or thereabouts) and about cdi failures.....but just wondering about other pitfalls in the long run.as I plan to keep my LT long term.

The only Triumph part on mine that ever failed was the actual starter motor. The case magnets that surround the windings broke apart for some reason. Put another starter in and haven't had any other problems.

Failed regulator with wires toasted, CDI questionalble and coils replaced, Lucas is ALIVE! 04 running very well now...
50,000 miles on it only one battery, few sets of tires, etc, etc...Replaced the suspension, pipes, adjusted jets.

I installed that when I put in a beefed up clutch on my 03 America. Did it prevent a problem? I'll never know now But when I heard of the problems a few others had, and I was getting the new ignition from them anyhow, I decided not to take chances.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

If Lucas was alive you wouldn't have those issues, I always ran stock Lucas electric (and still do) on my old bikes and never had an issue caused by a Lucas componant. The harness sucked in them but I always ran my own. Lucas magnitos run forever, I have some from the 50s that are still going on the bike they came on. What madern ignition can claim that kind of longevity?

only failure on my 05 has been the original CDI. It crapped out around 20K miles but the dealer still warranteed it.

no problems with the replacement part.

I was just discussing the same thing with my mechanic, and as he said, motors, machinery, and everything else, just eventually wears out, and that's unfortunately true.Hopefully mine will be with me a long time yet.I'm only here half the year and my rides are about 70km minimum, not stop-start, so hopefully it'll last .

Well, The engines may wear eventually but it's a gradual process, nothing that would cause the issues described. It is possible a bad cdi was installed or even a clogged fuel filter, best get a real mechanic to look at it before giving up. Good Luck.

A "real" mechanic? What are you saying? Honestly, this bike has served me well, and is currently on the "back burner", as I have 2 other bikes that I'm currently in up to my neck in. One is a 1971 Triumph Bonny that I have just replaced the rings in, as well as having the transmission completely disassembled, JUST to find out what I had! My other bike is a 1976 BMW R90/6 that again I resurrected and gave new life to, as well as a 1966 TR6, and a '72 Bonny that I found in the woods after sitting several decades. I'm currently employed as a Boeing 737-700 technician for a major airline, and have been a federally licensed FAA A&P technician for nearly 35 years. I've been working and rebuilding automobiles since 1974, and simply haven't had the time OR desire to remove the cylinder head off of this America, mainly because parts are extremely expensive, and takes FOREVER to acquire. I will get this bike fixed eventually, as it's clearly worth more to me than I can get for it (maybe)...I'm about at the same point in the movie "Wild Hogs" where Ray Liotta says "Ya see that '48 Pan head out there? Well IM SICK OF IT!!!".......So as far as being a "real mechanic", I think I qualify!!! I'll figure this out......I just hoped someone on here maybe had the same issue so I could save some time.

b717doc, I'm sorry I meant no disrespect. I assumed that you sent your bike in to a dealer for service and they let you down. You never mentioned if you were getting spark or fuel when the bike died so I thought you were a rider and not a mechanic. Again I meant no disrespect.

No problem Dennis, I get frustrated and write things I shouldn't. I have a nasty habit of venting on here, and of Facebook...No offense taken my friend, and I apologize as well...

Bad compression on right cylinder when hot. Cold is normal. Sourcing parts and machine shop....Looks like I'll be a Vintage BMW rider this year!!!
