Hi, I rode 10 mi today and the bike just cut off. Would not start back up. Trailered it home. It starts fine, rode half a mile and it cut off. No spark, cooled down then I had spark. Does this sound like the coils are bad? Bike runs great and gets fuel. 06 america. Thanks

Could be your pick up coil since both sides are losing fire.

I would be leaning towards pick up coil as well. Generally a cdi failure starts with intermittent loss of spark to one cylinder, loss of spark to both and then being able to restart after a cool off period is a sign of pick up coil failure.

Symptom wise I agreed it pointed towards the pick up coil but I can say I've never seen a bad one. So this one as far as I remember anyway, is my first.

Hope you get it sorted out

I have seen 2 so far, one was a member here who tested it in water. It was fine cold but when heated it failed , another reason his description put the pick up coil in my mind. So far every CDI failure I have seen the bike drops one side but still runs, at least at first.

Both mine and Mikes bike had similar cdi issues, would just not start sometimes.. spins but no spark. Cycle the ignition and they were good to the next shut down. Then the dice roll begins again.. maybe it will maybe it won't.

I've had my share of these gremlins for sure. My first go to is the CDI.

When my CDI failed around the 40,000 mile mark the left cylinder would intermittently cut out, kick in again, then cut out again. It always started though. I have not personally had a pick up coil fail but I have read of a few accounts on here and on the rat sight where people's bikes would die after running, be able to restart after sitting for a bit(the bike/pick up coil cools down), then die again. With those symptoms the pick up coil has always been the culprit. I believe sometime in the mid 2000s Triumph recommended the pick up coil gap be set to 08.mm from the previous 1.0mm and people say that greatly reduced failures.

You have it backwards...the original air gap spec was 1.0mm & the revision is 0.8mm...

You are correct, sorry about that. I edited my post to reflect the correct specs.
