Well, I survived another one. But can anyone understand why people will do without things they need for 2 months or more to save up, then all crowd into stores they haven't visited for a year just so they can fight over blowing all their money on stuff they don't want just because it's on sale?

Because we HAVE TO!
Over the years the retailers have programmed us to do this.

At one time I thought it was pretty fun to get up early and see what I could get at a fantastic price. But usually all I would end up getting is some pairs of socks. Now, with Amazon and other online retailers, if I want something I just order it rather than having to deal with the crazy crowds at the big box stores.

I totally get it. It's a buzz with all the excitement and the over anxious crowds, plenty of drama without having to watch it on tv. Not for me and my wife, though. We've NEVER done a black friday sale and couldn't care less.

Meh, life is how you deal with it. I choose to go and patronize some of the mom and pop shops in the area. They don't have big sales, but they can use some money for the holidays and I got some stuff I wanted. To top it up, we went out together as a family and enjoyed some time together.

What you don't want to go out and buy some S.E. Asian made goods at prices that could't be touched by N. American made goods just so you can look at this web site in high definition across the width of your living room wall?
Yah, nor do I.

I have to admit it can be entertaining to stand out of the way and watch the masses. I saw a big fight when someone grabbed something and found it was broken, then threw it back in the wrong place. 4 others thought it was the last one and got into a brawl over it even though it was useless.

I've never participated either , but some are, seems it's been reported that gun sales on Black Friday exceeded the amount of guns needed to supply the Marines.

That doesn't surprise me, I saw quality brand AR-15s for $575 out the door, last Friday. At prices that low, everybody who wants one can afford two or three.

How is it a professional Marine can get by w just one M-16 but Joe Citizen gun owner needs 2 or 3 Ar-15s? Well I guess 3 are better than one. At least that's the way it is w motorcycles.

I person needs 3 ar15s because they jam, and stove pipe, and fail to feed.

All the AR s I have pinned together have been fully functional. You do have to de carbonise the actions after 150 rounds, but that's due to the gas impingement action design more than anything else. Stay away from bargain basement components if you want good results. Me personally, I currently only own one, but I have three different styles of barrelled upper receivers, mission or mood specific, so to say.

You just named a reason for their unreliability. Carbon in the gas impingement system after 150 rounds. Sounds aweful. Kind of like those dodge transmissions with the shift solenoid problems...they work just fine as long as you never ....... Junk is junk. It either works or it don't.

When it comes to that sort of gun I gravitate to the soviet block weapons. No close tolerances, poor fit and finish, will fire endlessly no matter what you do to them.

I can still remember when they first came out.We were told all kinds of bull, such as,They seldom if ever needed cleaning. If they hit you in the arm they'd take it off due to the high velocity and bullet tumble.Like Ian,back in the days we were trusted to own semi auto rifles[I'm still pissed off at John Howard],I never had a SKS or AK variant jam .

Todays AR15's are nothing like the ones from the old days.Way more reliable and better materials, keep them clean and they will operate 100%.

IMI is distributing their semi auto version of their Galil again, truly the Opus of all the AK variants. Only $1800 base price, if you want the very best. Only Finnish Valmet AKs can be honestly compared in function, quality and hammer forged barrel accuracy to the Israeli rifle, but those aren't likely to be imported anymore.

Yes the Valmets were very good. But as you say, expensive. When they were sold here they were bigger bucks than my favourite, the M14,[ if I remember correctly.] The new ARs are a better deal than the old ones.faster twist barrels, better calibres, heavier projectiles, etc.,but how long has it taken to improve? The US military are apparently beefing up their hitting power by putting some M14s back in amongst the M16s .It seems the Com. block just made the AK and said "That's it" Throw it out of a truck, or run over it with a truck,it'll still go" "bang!"

The H&K 416 is an excellent option. I like the FN FAL. M14 is a good one just not the 5.56 mini 14 version.

I like what the army issued when I was in the service. I've only seen one M1 failure but it didn't happen 'cause the powers told us it couldn't. The seer wore down just enough that the jar of the bold slamming home caused it to release. Target popped up, GI squeezed the trigger and.... bangbangbang all 8 rounds fired. 'Course it's impossible for the M1 to ever autofire, so it didn't really happen and we were told to shut up about it.

Throw an SKS or AK in a swamp then bury it in the sand after running 2,000 rounds through it ,pick it up and it will operate 100%.

I had an M1 carbine and really liked it. Not an accurate rife by my standards but none of the ones we are discussing here are, mine never jamed and always worked fine. Wish I still had it.

An M1 Carbine is a fine short (0-250 yards) range assault rifle, there are huge cemeteries of deceased Germans who can attest to that.

I liked the M1 carbine too.Fun and reasonably effective with softpoints at close range.I never had an M1 Garand unfortunately, but I have shot an FN-FAl.It was a good rifle. I did have an M14 which was great.I also loved the Swedish Ljungman 6.5x55, it was the most accurate semi-auto I ever had but they had jams apparently.I never had mine jam but it didn't have any rough or prolonged use. Thanks again Howard.I'll never forget you

.
A friend told me, when they got to Vietnam, some blokes would put a broken match under the sear of their SLRs[Aussie version of the FN-FALs]so they'd purposely autofire.

Once upon a time, I got to play with an as issued STG-58 and at 100 yards on rock and roll, the safest place to be downrange was where I was aiming. Deliberate aimed fire was a entirely different matter and felt quite redeeming to my bruised ego..

And with a match under the sear to trip it, would be you wouldn't be able to stop until you ran out of ammo I guess. Semi Auto they were a great rifle.

I had an M1 carbine at Ft Hood, and an M2 in Germany. Great weapon for me as a truck mechanic. Light and compact, and just enough range to defend yourself while under the hood of a 2 1/2 or 5 ton truck. Shortly before I got out, they took away the carbines and M5 grease guns and gave us M14's. The early M14 had a light weight fiberglass stock that ruined the balance and just made it a terrible weapon to shoot. Some of the guys had grease guns, excellent for mechanicing, but they went through ammo too fast to be good for defense. One of the nice things was that there could be a lot wrong with it and you could still get it to work. I saw a demo where they completely removed the trigger assembly. Then they shook it a few times to get it started and slammed the trapdoor (combination dust cover/safety) to stop it. Another good point was that if you lost one it only cost you $17 because it was mostly sheet metal stampings. I was qualified with the M3 carbine, but those were a real pain to move around because they needed a truck battery and power supply. Loved the M20 rocket launcher (bazooka) but the ammo was so expensive I only got to fire it a few times. Nice thing was that there were only 2 guys in the company that were qualified, so I used to get to sit out on the perimeter with it all day during alerts instead of crawling under trucks and working on them in the wet grass.

Ed-Clovis NM. I was stationed at Cannon AFB back in the day. that would have been 1979 and 80 before heading to RAF Lakenheath. The good old F-111D. Unfortunately in the Air Force working on Avionics they did not let us play with guns.
