It looks like a series of aftershocks have destroyed a number of roads and railway lines and at least one city is totally isolated with poor weather looming. It's going to be a tough slog.

I wish we could get better news about it here, but they are still stuck on crap like "When he was 3, Trump called the neighbor kid 'doodoo head'".

I've been reading about it thru the Guardian and the BBC. They've cleared a couple of roads for all terrain vehicles but good reporting is still scarce.

The good thing is that the epicenter was in a fairly isolated area. The structures are a lot stronger than those in the Italian quake resulting in less loss of life. Friends in Christchurch had their home damaged in a quake five years ago and only had it repaired 6 moths ago due to the backlog for repairs. All the best to everyone there.

We're a long way from where it happened, but were woken just after midnight and the pool which is one of those above ground canvas ones was jiggling around and the Bulls in the paddock next to the house started bellowing like mad. We didn't find out till the morning what had happened.

We've got the 75th anniversary of our Navy happening at the moment up in Auckland, Ships from navys all over the world are here, with the exception of the US,Canada and Aus, they are down at Kaikoura helping with the relief efforts. AWESOME! Very humbling feeling knowing of the help available when it is needed. Thankyou to those Countrys involved

When there are that many occurrences of the road tearing like that, I would imagine a bit of caution would be a good idea, roaming about the woods and countryside. There could be crevasses, that would swallow a car.

That and the earthquake in N W Canada along with others that involve the Pacific plate. I cannot live in and even get antsy visiting Vancouver. If the big shake that is predicted occurs sometime and if it reaches the level other areas around the ring of fire have experienced in the past decade then surf is up and Van is under water for a short period at least long enough to destroy the city. I have been in Guatemala when the earth is moving under ones feet and that does not freak me out as much as the potential damage from a 8 to 9er off the BC coast. We had friends over for dinner tonight who were in a caravan just outside Christchurch a few years ago when the big one hit, they were in the countryside at a camp ground and felt huge shaking but could not believe the damage in the city when they ventured there a few days after the after shocks subsided.

I was in Subic city Phillipines with US navy mates stationed there when Mt.Pinatubo Volcano blew up.They'd moved a lot of extra personnel there from Clark Airbase too as they thought it'd safer .Wrong.The aftershocks and jerry built buildings falling down.It was a hell of a night and the days following I assure you.

Interestly, that part of the world is slightly unstable. Australia is constantly moving and because of it's size the continent's GPS has to be recalibrated every three to four years.
I hope our friends in NZ are safe and their recovery goes smoothly.

Im glad you qualified it as the land mass is unstable most Aussies and Kiwis seem quite stable to me especially those that ride Speedmasters.
