I believe the oil pickup changed at some point, so make sure you are changing like for like.

To the best of my knowledge from what I worked out when I was changing my engine covers there are 3 variants.

790cc, 865cc (carb) & 865cc (efi)

I'm sure I found the difference between the 790cc & 865cc was the crankcase breather & maybe a couple of other differences.
As for the carb & efi 865cc, the efi has a bigger diameter gear change shaft.

I have some Speedmaster covers I plan to put on my America as a winter project. From my checking, most of the Bonneville family clutch covers are interchangeable. Like noted above, the oil or breather pipe of the earlier models mean a like year swap would be needed. After that was changed there were some differences in either the gear selector rod or clutch actuator rods being different diameters on some models. I believe the cover had the same size hole but the seal/bearings had different inner diameters. Replacing the seal/bearing is a low dollar and easy job and I was planning on replacing them anyway.
