I've been using a SignalMinder for over ten years. It is a nifty little replacement for the turn signal flasher unit that turns the flashers off after a selectible number of flashes. I also use the connection that stops the countdown while the brakes are applied. It also has a number of other functions that I do not use. I've never had one last more than 16 months, long enough that the warranty has expired.
I think I've found the problem. The flasher unit on our bikes is just above the engine and my last unit would work while it was cold and fail once it got hot. I just replaced the unit (from Fast Eddy of course) but this time I spliced in wires and moved the unit to a spot under the seat. For now it works great, I'll let everyone know how that works in the long run.
Oh by the way, if you ever need to solder wires in close quarters the trick I use is to put some shrink tubing a few inches way from the joint and use a cigar lighter to heat the wiring joint prior to applying the solder to the joint. Then I slide the shrink tubing over the joint and shrink it with a heat gun. I get a very secure and well insulated joint and avoid burning the adjacent wires.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Are you meaning one of those butane lighters that are available?

Problem with your method of soldering Larry, is you are probebly getting a cold joint that would be prone to failure. You should flux then heat the wire until the wire is hot enough to melt the solder flowing it into the wire. Solder will travel toward the heat.

Exactly the way I was taught in shop class. The difference is that I use the pressurized butane lighter to keep the fire very small so I can easily keep it away from everything around it. It works very well on tiny joints like wiring, I use the big torch for copper pipes. The shrink tubing then gives me an excellent insulator. Plus, I can use the lighter to ignite my stogie.

Yes, the pressurized ones with the blue flame. Works like a charm on small joints like wiring.

Larry, I am getting older and think I should have self cancelling signals now. What is the advantage of Signalminder over just self cancelling signals. Given the problems you have had, would you buy them again?

The SignalMinder is a replacement for the flasher unit under the tank. Quick and easy replacement. I also attached the wire to the brake light, that puts the cancel on hold until the brake is released. I have bought them for both bikes. The problem was likely due to engine heat over a year or so as the unit is just above the engine. I moved the unit to a location under the seat.
