I need a definative answer. I have no idea why Triumph (who built their reputation on speed) would do this. My 2015 Speedmaster has a speed limiter which cuts in at exactly 97mph. This makes it slower than my 1967 TR6! It certainly doesn't deserve the name speedmaster! Can't even go to a ton up day. Tried several forums. Lots of people moaning about it but no answer. HOW DO I REMOVE IT?

It can't be for speed reasons. Getting the ecu re mapped would do it, surely? I believe my R3 was restricted to 135mph (I think because after that it would be like an out of control steam train if it hit anything ) and I had 151mph out of my Sprint (on a private road of course ...). As for getting it removed, there must be a way but I'm sure it would need a 15yr old with a laptop.

Several people have tried remapping the ecu with no success. As its only on the digital speedo models after 2011 I wondered if there is some form of feedback from the Speedo which causes it?

Possible I suppose. If it's a problem not being able to exceed and indicated 97mph then junking the stock ecu and / or speedo has got to be a possibility. I can't believe someone out there hasn't already done it. Is it the same with Bonnies of that age too do you know?

Seems to be the same tho the limit seems to be set higher on Bonneville and Thruxton models

Here is a stupid thought. Do you have a tach? Watch for the RPM at which the limiter kicks in. Unplug the speedo, and see if it still cuts out at that RPM. If is, it is not a gauge deal, which I highly doubt it would be anyways. It is most likely an ECU setting.

TuneECU has a map for the later model America/Speedmaster that is supposed to bypass the speed limiter. I was seriously considering this, but if I am understanding ya'll right, it does not work. Is this correct?????

Since Speedmasters are geared lower than the America I need to ask, you're not hitting the rpm limiter are you?
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I can't answer for the Speedmaster, but on my 13 America the limiter kicks in at 97-98 mph at less than 6k rpm. I have been able to touch the ton briefly in 4th gear before the speed limiter kicks in. It is not the rev limiter that prevents this. She will run at 90 mph around 5200 rpm and is happy to do so. I usually don't ride this fast but if I am on an open road with no traffic I will let her breathe every now and then.

I just rode home a wind shielded and loaded down 2010 Speedmaster from Tennessee last August and it would do 107+ (according to the speedo) on the flats in Wyoming until I couldn't hold my legs in front of me due to airflow fatigue. It has a 17T front sprocket. I think your problem may be bike specific. Put a Fire Starter ignitor in and see if your rev limiter will behave properly. America s are faster?..Meh, that's pride talking and while fun, just plain silly.

I would like to just throw a couple thoughts at this problem:
do you have a OBD cable port on the bike? assuming yes, have you or are you able to see the tune with Tune ECU? If you are able to see the existing tune in the bike and copy it. If you send the .hex file I would be willing to take a look at it.
the other item to look at is the gear selection indicator, it may well be tied to the speed limiter. This is common with all makes of sport bikes (although they are limited at 300 kph) the limiters only work in the highest gear. The sport bike guys often fix this by installing a module to make their ECU think that the bike is in 5th instead of 6th.
to test this theory, just see if you can go faster than your limiter in 4th gear.

I like the sound of that. I have not seen any fast Americas yet.

I have another thought. I have seen in the Triumph Accessories catalogs, some bikes have a "Restrictor Kit - 34PS" available. Could this bike have one installed? Just a thought, as I know nothing about these kits.

After consulting with Mr. Google, the 34ps kit is used in countries that restrict hp to 34 for a period of time before the riders license can be upgraded. I can't see this as the culprit. It has to be in the computer and there has to be a way to override it.

I have a 2004 SM and have no problem going by the ton mark, I can bury the speedo as indicated. Actual speed? Have no idea.My bike is lightly modified but no big bore or custom carbs. I did blueprint it.If they limit the new 1200cc bikes like that what's the point in the extra cc?

my son in laws Aprilia RSV4R came with a speed limiter on it, so he had to change out the ECU for a aftermarket one. Its clearly a race bike, so why the limiter?
I guess its for your own good, like the warnings on cigarettes and beer labels?

BSD performance in UK can remap including switching off this irritating device...I'm going there as soon as I get the pennies saved. There must be other folks who can do this job.
