I bought a 1" diameter axle for a Harley rear wheel. The axle was new and didn't cost very much. It came as a raw steel unit so that I could chrome it after I made sure it fit. Well guess what, the axle didn't fit, wasn't concentric and was .023 larger ( 1.023" ) than the listed true inch. I measured the run out and turned it down on my lathe, giving it a .002 slip fit( .998 ). Now it fits the bearing just right and I still have room for the chroming process. So when you buy something from a reputable dealer, check it first before you install it. "LET THE BUYER BEWARE"

I would have started over with some annealed drill rod, after I got my money back from the vendor. Oversize and out of round for a supposedly plug and play axle? One could honestly suspect the quality of the alloy of the axle itself, specially after flaws of that nature that came to light. It seems that many products we buy now, have no quality control during manufacture at all.

B0254. I'm retired and in the process of buying a house with a shop. After paying off my daughter's tuition this year, I have to save and buy parts a little at a time. It's a good thing I bought my welders, lathe, and mill while I was working so I don't have to pay for any machining or welding.....But I'm getting close and having fun working on it.

RYK, I would have got my money back but it was just easier to turn it down, plus I bought a new index cutter set a few days back and was eager to use it.

I agree with Ryk, there seems to be little QC with stuff leaving the factory ( China) and sometimes even US plants. I was at Home Depot and there were 12 recall notices on products sold by them. Last week I went through 18, yes 18 cans of Rustoleum rattle can before I got one to spray longer than 2 seconds. Got 3 different lamps from Lowes and all 3 had missing parts. Unacceptable.

Agreed, what percentage more are you willing to pay to avoid this?

During some hard times I used to do a little scrapping "garbage picking for scrap" I found that the better neighborhoods through out a lot less stuff. I think it may be best to buy the best and keep it forever. Sort of like a Triumph.

A lot more. I got some monster u joints for my dump truck once and the guy set three boxes down, they had that China look. He said they were 38.00 and I says I want the Spicer ones made in USA. He says they be 114.00 each. I says OK, that's what I want. I would gladly pay a lot more for high quality USA stuff. That's my first choice, but I do like some stuff from other countries other than China.

Wade's attitude is the only thing that is going to make America stay competitive, we need to buy U.S. made goods as often as possible. I buy made in USA every chance I get, it's always more expensive but it's also always a higher quality of material and tolerance. I'll pay 100% more to have a quality item made here over some piece of $hit made in china
Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

Good on ya Dave ! Today I got me a Leibman broom and dustpan made in USA (finally) and at Dollar General I got me a USA ironing board. I nearly fainted. I gots me a wall painting from Overstock .com that was made in USA ! Now all three of these things are mostly from China and junk. I just LOVE to see "made in USA " on something.
