another 'leaning in the wind' event. everyone is in a rush to buy water and food, really? yep, too many folks always rib me when mention is made of my hurricane pantry. Canned fruit, beans, greens, pumpkin/sunflower/raw cashews, you name it. I'm cooking my butter right now (ghee requires no refrigeration), and the rest of our bacon is frying. We'll have fresh eggs as long as the girls don't get 'carried away'. gonna board up today. Gonna shift the boar from the garage feezer to the kitchen side by side frig as tons of frozen seafood is in that one. Should power get lost for longer than my gas, the neighbors will enjoy some merritt island hog and wild caught seafood! yesterday was spent collecting all the yard riff raft to keep the missiles at a minimum. all electronic devices fully charged, including my dewalt batteries. got 8 gallons of ethanol free gas yesterday. got plenty of booze. loads of charcoal. moe's not evacuating, lynns in silver spring. mandatory evacuation order in effect at 3pm today. if needed, there is plenty of generator gas in the Highlander. and another 12 gallons in the motorsickles. the talking heads are talking this one up as the worst ever. yep, they get paid to stoke the panic. bunch of empty vessels they are. got plenty of batteries, flashlights, lighters, and, ... ammunition. btw newt, You guys on the 'jerry springer' coast have some warnings up for tropical storms. Bikes are all in the sheds, sheds are all under trees. Windows will be boarded up tomorrow, house is all under trees. Cleaned up yard debris, but then glanced over at the neighbors yards. Did I mention that EVERYTHING'S under trees!
And you may see me tonight

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to keep your helmet and a flotation device handy. I saw first hand what Hugo, Andrew and Katrina were capable of. Just sayin'

I tend to agree. Crate those chickens up throw them in the truck and head out to higher ground. I'm sure Chy and Di wouldn't mind a visit.

I don't where your getting your update Ryk but Melbourne Beach and Merritt Island and the space coast is right in the path of Matthew. By the time it gets to Jacksonville it is predicted to start moving east out to sea.

Big Storm Radar Track with accompanying headline on the Weather Channel, main brunt moving North away from Palm Beach. I wasn't insinuating it was BBQ weather at Moe s house, for goodness sakes..I did mention something about, if the storm doesn't back track. OK Paul?

It looks like it held offshore which is a good thing. Hopefully the storm surge wasn't at its peak and things will turn out okay.

Shaun, I couldn't help thinking of the last time Lynn and I boarded up for a hurricane. You were here and did the classic leaning in the wind thing. This hurricane, it was the West wind that blew stuff away. Our home suffered little damage, some soffit pieces blew out and two fence panels blew over. Remarkably enough, none of our pool cage was damaged. And the solar roof panels are in place and working. Our property in Cape Canaveral lost about 9 square of rolled roofing. At 11pm Thursday October 6, the new forecast track shifted Matthew's predicted course 20 miles East. That 20 miles saved the whole region. I lived in Miami Shores when Andrew hit back in 1992. Was in the keys at the time on holiday and had to evacuate. We evacuated to Merritt Island. Took us 14 hours. Went back to my Miami Shores home after stocking up on supplies. Was without power for two weeks. Miami was not Homestead. And Homestead was what Matthew had in store for us this past Friday. I've yet to talk to a neighbor that holds a different opinion. We dodged a big one. Big Time. We had power until 6:15 Friday morning. Power was restored at 3:15 pm the same day. Water service was not interrupted. And we lost no perishable food. Made two pots of java Friday and had one egg on the stove when we lost power. The night before I steamed two pounds of wild caught shrimp and cooked a wild caught salmon filet. Had the parents staying with me (and their dog 'sammy', jeez do I miss having a dog), Thursday night and until Friday afternoon. The shrimp was munched on by Mom and Dad and the remainder was refrigerated as was the salmon, for the cooler should Mathew disrupt our power for an extended period. pre-cooked food is the 'bees wax' when power is lost. So Shaun, you see that with every hurricane Lynn and I are thinking of you, out in the middle of the street, acting like a big kid!!!! Always brings a smile to us. Nice frame of reference eh? !

Hey Jim - glad to hear that it wasn't as bad as they were predicting.
As to my "leaning into the wind" - well you have to make the most of the opportunities don't you?? As you know, I was determined to experience a hurricane if I could, even to the extent of hurrying down to Florida in 2003 only for the storm to pass me by going north!! The strongest winds we have in the UK only get up to 90mph so if I had to do it in the US. (Mind you I did draw the line at staying in my tent after a tornado warning had been issued in Michigan!!)
Hope you manage to dodge them for the rest of the season, give my best to Lynn

Good news, that shift east made a huge difference. Thank goodness you came away with minor damage.

I'm glad it stayed far enough out to keep ya on the island The name of the bar was the B.A.R. Sorry to say it has since closed. The name of my rally drink is "Onse", good stuff. Yes, as Austin has aged he has somewhat come to his senses and he now wears long pants at times. HaHa

Yeah man, that last jog to the east saved the bacon here. We lost a few shingles and have a ton of yard/tree damage. A friend of mine on the Westside of the river here on the beachside had his entire screened porch blow off, fly over his house and the power lines, and land in a neighbor's yard across the street. Still, he and all of us were lucky.
