Hey everyone. I don't know where else to ask this question so I'm hoping the moderators will let me ask here. My DSL internet service with AT&T is very sporadic out here in the country and I'm thinking of trying satellite internet but don't know anyone who has it to get an opinion. Does anyone here have satellite internet and if so can you tell me if it is reliable and do you run out of allowable usage before the month is up. Thanks.

I've never had satalite service myself but I believe all sorts of factors can effect a quality reception like weather or proximity to strong radio signals etc I'm lucky, where I live it's only about 8 years old and I have fibre optic giving me about 65 Mb / sec

My mom has it, she never talks about running out of data usage. I can tell you it is slow compared to my cable, that is the only thing I can offer. It isn't dial up slow but slower to load things than my service.

When my DSL is up and running the most Mb/sec I can get is 2.8 AT&T says it's not their problem. I've tried different computers and different modems plus bypassed the house telephone wire system and went straight to where the wires come from AT&T, same results. Because of where I live the max I can get is 2.8 Mb/sec and that's what I pay for. I would be happy with the 2.8 if it was constant. But like yesterday all I could get was 250 Kb/sec.

I tried satellite and found it adversely affected by wind, clouds, darkness, sunshine and the belief in the Tooth Fairy. Half the bandwidth for what broadband customers get on a slow day and at the same price. That was twelve years ago, maybe they have debugged it by now, IDK?

I've never had Sat internet, but I did Sat TV, it was a mess. Everytime it rained or snowed it didn't work, so when you were stuck inside the house you were screwed. I have AT&T now, it's fine my ROKU and surfing the net, but slow on HD porn images.

I don't know if it's the same now, but when I was designing communication simulators, the recommended timer setting for waiting for a response was 1 second for wired lines and 10 seconds for satellite. The data rates are similar in streaming mode, but you lose a lot of bandwidth when there is a lot of command/response data. Also, as with satellite TV, thunderstorms tend to obliterate the signal. Our local rural co-op telephone provider has an outstanding service record. We get on the order of 28 MB both ways.

A couple of friends had dish tv and internet. Anything and everything made it glitchy. I wouldn't try it.

We now run everything through Direct Tv, they are now tied in with ATT. Never any problems with our Direct TV dish system, about 2 years now.

That tie sucks! I have AT&T cell service and had it years before they went Cingular and still have it. Service is great here with AT&T but now they are trying to push the TV service on customers. I can have unlimited data if I want to buy Direct TV. I have unlimited data now but they throttle it back after like 16GB because I don't want the TV service.

FWIW, DSL provider's highest speeds are cable's slowest speeds. High Speed Internet is non existent for DSL connections but they market it as high speed. Sort of like Armour Lard. Lard has in big writing on the package: zero grams trans fat per serving, yet the second ingredient on the ingredient label is hydrogenated lard. Point? Buy Duck Fat (copper cable) not Lard.
Or Beef Tallow (Fiber optic). Your roasted veges will never taste the same.
