Has anybody ever found out anything about getting the speedo
recalibrated? Mine is off by 10 mph and last year the dealer
told me 10.6 mph was within spec and gave me their rationale
for it.

10.6 In Spec?? Is that 10.6 over the full range of the speedo? Does it read Fast or Slow??

I rode with 3 other bikes back from Daytona. Two of the other bikes had GPS. One leading bike had cruise control (no GPS) and set it for 75. We rode for hours and mine consistently read 78-79, BUT both GPS units showed 73. So I guess once in the 70s, mine is 5-6 mph off.

I would like to know what effect that has on the odometer. If the odometer is off, then so are all my MPG estimates. I didn't get a good check on it - maybe next time I'm on the highway.

They are all off slightly, mine by 5 mph. Figure that keeps me from getting speeding tickets! Doubt there is a way to calibrate.

According to my GPS, my speedo was running fast (as everyone elses seems to) but the odo ran slow (long). So if the GPS said 100 miles, the odo was at 95 or so. Seems like if the speedo were running fast, the miles would run short rather than long, but not so in my case. That works out OK if your running for a minimum measured distance, rather than running fast/short like most Jap speedos tend to do.

JJ, when I tried to watch the odometer, it seemed it was running less than the mile markers, not more. I kept thinking about it and it just didn't make sense. It does seem like if the speedo is fast, the odo would read more miles. SO, it could be that my MPG figures may need to be inflated by 5% or so. Next time I'm riding with a GPS, I'll try to get an accurate odo check, but I bet mine is running like yours.

According to those roadside radar wagons, mine reads exactly +10 from 42mph (reads 52) all the way to 105 (reads 115). Not sure about the odometer but, on a 100+ mile run, it's within 3 miles of the digital one on the OL's Lowrider and maybe 2 miles of the Mapquest guestimates.

I find that once I get above 40 or so mine reads low. When I
read 70 I am doing 60. The dealers, I talked to two of them, both gave me the same BS story about 10.6 is in spec. It was like they rehearsed the speech together. If your speedo reads 60 and you were going 70 they would fix it. As for the odometer being off, mine reads correctly for mileage. It is the magnetic movement of the needle that is
off not the rpms of the input cable. If you had a speedo that reads correctly and then you changed tire size that would effect both because the input no longer matches the rolling distance of the tire. The magnetic swing of the needle can be calibrated but the speedo shop near me closed
years ago because of lack of business with the newer cars
having electronic speedos.
