Who's gonna fill his shoes?
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

I'm lucky enough to have had Merle as one of the main acts on a concert series Alabama headlined during the late 80s. He lived the life he wrote about and it was something. Never used a set list either, which made for some real tightrope moments with the Strangers as they waited for Hag to kick off the next song...yet they always fell in seamlessly behind him and played arrangements true to his recordings.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Yep, I knew he didn't play for Led Zep or Black Sabbath though! My GF couldn't believe I didn't know who he was either. I had heard the name though.

Hard to believe a grown man did not know who Merle was, How old are you? It pays to expand your horizons just a bit for a fuller life.

Todays so called country music is not the same as the old country. Merle and his generation will be sorely missed!

Modern country sucks. Its so formulated and sounds like contemporary praise and worship church music, with country buzz words rather than church words.

There is a huge list: Hank williams, Townes Van Zandt, Charlie Pride, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Don Williams, Hank Jr. Steve Earl, and that's the short list.

Was in a line up in a Subway down in Cornwall 15 years ago, over the speaker system a country station from the Awksasknee reservation was playing some Hank Snow. Two teens ahead of me were not impressed with the music so I asked them if they like Missisippi delta blues music. Both replied yes and I agreed as I like alot of blues musicians so I posed the concept that this is white man western blues, take away the harmonica and put a guitar in the musicans hands and it isnt alot different. They smiled nodded and their heads, not sure what they listen to today but maybe have a better appreciation of Country Music.

From PBS American Masters series: "Merle Haggard: Learning To Live With Myself" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK24PpV7ufwThe owner of the film posted it with the note: "This film is our copyright protected intellectual property. We have made it available for streaming for a limited time on our Youtube channel so Merle's fans can enjoy it and celebrate his memory." You might wanna watch it sooner than later in case Spothouse pulls it down. PBS does not have it available at the moment. RIP Mr. Haggard. Thank you for all you gave us. Coupla quick facts. Raised in a boxcar turned into a home. Hopped his first freight train at age 10, and went for a 18 hour ride. During a visit to his alma mater San Quentin Prison, Haggard was in the audience when Johnny Cash played there. Haggard heard / saw Cash and decided there and then what he wanted to do with his life. Turned out pretty damned well too. ````````````````````````````````````````````````` Off topic time - another from PBS Masters Series Did she "invent" rock and roll? That is a radically over simplified question, but in short - if you ask me, the answer is - yes, and long before Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/sister-rosetta-tharpe-full-episode/2516/

Pretty sure Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes was sung by George Jones. Maybe Haggard recoreded it as well but I don't think I've heard it. Anyone who is over 30 years old, been in a bar and never heard, Momma Tried or The Fighting Side Of Me or Okie from Muskogee, well I guess they were pretty dang drunk.

When I was a yout, listening to classics on the radio in my parents Mercury, such as 'The Bridge Washed Out and I Can't Swim and My Baby s On the Other Side', well I couldn't help but ponder that if C&W music wasn't a conspiracy to entice young Hillbilly Males into committing suicide. Some of those old time lyrics were, pretty damn depressing.

Don't forget this one -
Sing Me Back Home By Merle Haggard
The warden led a prisoner down the hallway to his doom And I stood up to say good-bye like all the rest And I heard him tell the warden just before he reached my cell "Let my guitar-playing friend do my request"
Let him sing me back home with a song I used to hear Make my old memories come alive Take me away and turn back the years Sing me back home before I die
I recall last Sunday morning a choir from 'cross the street Came in to sing a few old gospel songs And I heard him tell the singers "there's a song my mama sang Could I hear once before you move along?"
Won't you sing me back home, with the song I used to hear Make my old memories come alive Take me away and turn back the years Sing me back home before I die
Sing me back home before I die
Written by Haggard while he was in San Quentin in tribute to his buddy "Rabbit" who was put to death after a prison break Haggard was invited to attend. Haggard stayed behind, and Rabbit killed a state trooper while out on "sabbatical."
Some country singers talk the talk. Haggard walked the walk.

Good link to what he was about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f1d1JUxuno "The Poet of The Common Man" as good a description as I've ever heard

Shoot, I'm old enough to remember when Country and Western were two different things. Yippie-yi-yo-ki-yay!
And it wasn't the pop you hear now.
