The movie sure brought memories of drills in school and looking across the Detroit river to Belle Isle and seeing the Bomark missles rise up out of the ground on their daily exercise.

Sounds like a good movie. I personally enjoy spy movies based on the cold war instead of some fictitious villain. I suspect that's true for most, of a certain age who lived through it.

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" comes to mind, the PBS version being my fav of the two.

I still remember the drills in grade school that we did, where we crawled under the desks or went into the basement rooms. Because I was a little kid, I had no idea of the seriousness of the situation. And just today, PBS ran a show about the Cuban missile crisis.

You should have been walking to grade school on a military base the week of the Cuban Crisis. We knew it was serious.

Yeah, I think I could see why you might not have fully understood the reason for 'em, Rich...especially if you grew up in Iowa.

'Cause with probably half of my fellow kids' dads, who like my father worked for one of the many aerospace defense plants in the L.A. area at the time, WE little ones were told from the get-go that OUR area of the country would in all likelihood be Number-1 on the Ruskies' "hit parade" when the missiles started flyin'.

(...and yeah, I've been wantin' to see this flick too...from most reports, Spielberg has made a pretty good movie)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

"au contrare" (), Dwight, there was SOME reason to be worried, even here in the midwest! Ya see, one of the main Army arms manufacturing facilities was just twenty miles north of us, and at that time, producing nuclear components. (That's what I was told) So the town fathers WERE worried, thinking that although we wouldn't be a first strike, we COULD be a second or third strike target. And I WAS working there during the 9/11 terrorist strike. The next day I was practically STRIPPED SEARCHED when I went in to go to work. But sure, nothing like living on a military base, especially if you were in Florida or the East coast area! Now, THAT would have been scary!

Yep, you make a good point here, Rich.

I guess it was pretty much no matter where one might have been located at the time, if that button had been pushed, it was pretty much the case of the ol' bend over and kiss your a$$ goodbye, huh.

Yep, perhaps the reason you earlier said you didn't quite understand the seriousness of the situation back then was because you're a little younger than I, and thus might have been a little too young to comprehend the whole thing.

(...OR of course there could always be ANOTHER reason for being a little slow to have comprehended it all...you didn't happen to ride "the little bus" to school back then, did you???)

Dinner at our house tonight was four from Windsor my wife Jane from Montreal and sister in law from Saskatchewan. Windsorites were well aware of it even though we were in grade 3 Jane is 3 years younger and had no idea at the time and sister in law who is 2 years older was more worried about crop failure then any nuclear attack back then. I suspect there were a few silos in corn fields just a little south of Regina at that time.

Yah Mac it reminded me of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in the pace of the movie. It will not sell big numbers at the box office at least not until it wins Oscars and I think it has a shot at a few.

Here's the FEMA map of probable nuke strikes, two scenarios, 500 and 2000 warhead hit. Note the 500 strike goes after military targets, the 2000 goes after populations and even SE Iowa.

That kid would be me, my dad was stationed at Homestead AFB during that time. It was very, very tense.

Yes, I grew up on military reservations, prior to the crisis I had never seen anyone carrying a rifle except on parade. Never in the grade school cafeteria.

Most likely aimed at the powerplant SE of town.

Or the rather significant number of cattle yards in the area. Disrupt the food supply.
