Well Polaris/Indian aren't resting on their laurels, they just unveiled a smaller Scout with 61" motor putting out 78hp and 65 ft/lbs of torque. http://www.indianmotorcycle.com/en-us/scout-sixty-thunder-black/specs

This was done in part so they can get into the 999cc and under racing category.
It's also aimed at potential Sportster (and other) customers in that class and price range.
Exciting times.

As far as I'm concerned they messed up when they didn't dress up the engine with some fins and make it look a little like the bigger engine in the Chieftan and Classic. A machined water cooled engine like that is made to be hidden under fairings.

I have to agree with Dogg and PES. The tank is hideous, the rear fender and engine look industrial. I usually like the aesthetics of Indians.

78Hp and 65lbs torque is kinda good looking. I think the industrial look is exactly what they wanted. It will appeal to the younger folks not looking for retro.

I think they will take some Sportster and Honda people with it.

I like it ok. It's not FABULOUS, but I kinda like the industrial look. And it's not trying to be retro, it's trying to appeal to the younger set. But I have doubts as to it's selling. Mostly because of what I have heard from local HD dealers and THEIR offerings. One local dealer ordered in three of the new "entry level bikes, (600 cc or so, I can't remember what they are called.)In a years time, they hadn't sold a single one! HD and Indian both have the same problem. Their market is the 50 and older crowd, for the most part. Us old guys love the old timey styling. But the young crowd is all about SPEED and racer styling. One thing BOTH players have going for them. They both have electric bikes in the tubes.

I am missing something here. Looking at both the Scout and the Scout 60, they look to be identical bikes, other than engine size and $2K in price. And the Scout 60 is heavier than the Scout. If given a choice, I don't think the $2K discount in price would make me want to get the 60 over the Scout.

They just changed out the motor it would appear. Would advantages be lower insurance under a liter bike, possible lower import tariffs overseas for the smaller displacement, not sure but don't some European countries have size limits for the riders licenses? And there may be a fuel economy advantage.

Its only 30lbs heavier than the America, with higher HP and torque numbers it probably pulls very well. It has a lean angle of 31 degrees which is respectable. The America is a little higher but it looks like the Scout can do the twisted roads ok.

I would think the last thing Triumph or HD wants is a modern looking under a liter bike for 9 grand with liquid cooling and a belt.

I don't think I could be a buyer for a technical reason. No ABS.

I don't think Triumph has anything to worry about, especially if the America and SM eventually get the new 1200 Bonnie engine.

The big fear is that the America and Speedy get saddled with the 900cc engine. Here is to praying for the 1200!

Say what you want but the Scout is selling like hot cakes. It looks great on the road and I see a lot of them. The new Bonnie is coming to market just in the nick of time, The one behind the 8 ball is Harley, between the Scrambler Ducati, The Scout's and now the new Triumph line up the Sportster is getting long in the tooth.

Since the Indian-Victory-Polaris-Triumph Dealer is across the street from me I see and hear them all the time. They moved in this May. I am pretty sure this had something to do with me getting another bike after 23 years. That is a Triumph crate on the back of that truck. Guess I will be stopping in tomorrow.

Don't see any on the road in that shot either.Wouldn't matter anyway since that isn't here and I was speaking of here and the places I go in the flatbed. I don't see many Triumphs either but I see some and so far no Indians.
