I was talking to the local Thai Triumph dealer today and he told me they have begun production of the 1100cc water cooled engines. They're only selling bonnevilles locally, which are made here, and are having trouble filling back orders as a lot of folks aren't rapt in the looks of the new engine apparently and want the old style . Triumph didn't do the correct paperwork on the cruiser range so they're taxed with an import luxury tax,and therefore not imported, while the bonnevilles, made here, get a lower tax rate.
This information is on a "For What It's Worth" basis,so don't shoot me,I'm only the messenger. A lot could just be gossip. This is Thailand.Time will tell.

Triumph and paperwork again!
They need to put that motor in a laid back bike, like America and Speedmaster.

I think they would be smart to style the engine after the old Norton Commando, that would give it a traditional look that more people would like. Oh yeah, and put it in a cruiser frame!

The whole point about the Norton Commando is that it's ,er, a Norton not a Triumph. It's like saying Harley should make their bikes look like Victory's. Al

Making a Norton looking water jacket vs. Triumph may be cool. But the under 40 crowd really don't care about what a Norton motor looks like. They have generally never seen one in person.

Norton and Triumph were both the same company towards the end, and you have to admit, the Commando is one cool looking engine. Besides, the engine in the spy shot looks more like a vintage BSA to me, not Triumph.
If they made it look like a Norton, I would buy one. Isn't that enough?

If you think it looks more like a BSA than a Triumph then you don't know what either looked like.

But it has fake fins so Dwight will like it. I think its a horrible design. If somebody gave me one I would have it just long enough to sell it.

Am I really that far off? Because the google image of the 2016 Triumph Bonneville spy shot looks a whole lot like the google image of a 66BSA A65 Spitfire. To me anyway.

Maybe we are talking different parts, I am speaking mainly of the engine and that has no resemblance to a BSA at all. I ignored the rest since it was a test bike.

It doesn't really matter if we like it or not,the 1100 Bonne will sell, it was due for an up date. I applaud Triumph for their investment of resources, If only Harley would spend a bit of their War Chest on an updated Sportster, the money grubbing buggers. I see the new Bonne, the Scout and the Scrambler by Ducati as leaders in the emerging market consisting of younger riders. Triumph,Indian and Ducati sell combined less than half of Harley's sales yet they find a way to bring new exciting models to market, shame on Harley.

I don't like it but I agree, what hurt and almost put Triumph out of business in the past was no investment in developing new technology and new models. When the Honda 750four hit the market it took sales from all the old school stuff. Even came close to putting HD out too.

Yeah, that takes me back. I remember when the CB750 came out. It was wonderful and brilliant and Oh So popular.
At one point HD even got the US gov. to tack a special import tax on bikes over 700cc's because they were killing their sales. Most manufacturers then brought their bikes down to 699cc's just to avoid the tariff.

Very good point which was supported by the Reagan administration. On the other hand Thatcher would have nothing to do with a tariff on the market and we all know what the Japanese did to the Brit bikes even in their own homeland. I am curious to see the bike and I know living in the Midwest now that an 1100cc motor could be very welcomed on these straight and long roads. What is the latest rumor if this is just the Bonnie or the line up to include the America and Speedmaster?

I am quite sure. It was a four year window starting from 1983 designed to give HD a chance to compete against global competition by having a tariff for a temporary amount of time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHE5ym6ShkA

But it was far earlier that the 750four appeard on the market and put a hurting on Triumph and HD among others that no longer exist.

The tarriff was in responce to the "dumping"of Asian bikes on the U.S. market. The Dumping was proven in a court of law, and is very common in Asian economic warfare. Dumping is the practice of selling products in foreign markets for less than the home market with the intent of killing off compitition and gaining a monopoly.

Agreed. While Harley had Reagan who was supportive of protecting their interest, Triumph and the other Brit bikes had Thatcher who did not share the same view point of imposing a tariff to protect the industry and as they say, the rest is history.
I think part of the lead up was that Triumph sat on their laurels for a few decades, making the bikes in the 70s with machinery that was used in the 50s and that is what Hinckley Triumph has done a very good job in not getting trapped in. I think the 1100 Bonnie shows that they are keeping in tuned to possibilities and demands. It might not be for everyone but I give them credit for not repeating mistakes of the past of moving forward like that and I'm just curious to see the bike

If they do put this engine in a speedmaster or america and it puts out 100hp as the rumours suggest, what would be the point of the thunderbird, commander or storm ?

I don't remember Thatcher being a big player in the demise of the British bike industry... they did tthat all by themselves...... BSA were gone in, I think 1970( might be a year out) and Triumph made the last T140E in '77...I think...though Les Harris made his own till 1983 or so I owned all these and though the Norton Commando looked great and went well, it was a pig to start, electrically horrible and the engine self destructed within a few thousand miles from new......though nowadays there's folks in the UK who build them properly sorted...If have one of those, but the 'new' Commando holds no appeal at all for me. I like my bikes with conventional forks and proper rear suspension. To me the new Commando looks like it was lashed together in someone's shed...sorry to any fans of it, but there you are. the Brit.Bike industry was murdering itself very well without Thatchers help and probably couldn't have survived in any case but Jim Fogg who used to write "Fogg Patches" for the British "BIKE" magazine, reckoned that Thatcher played a part in the Meriden Co-op going under, foreclosing on their loans, denying gov't assistance etc. while Reagan was being very supportive of Harley in the U.S. at around the same time. IF, I remember what I read a long time ago correctly. I bought a 1976 Bonneville in 1978,that someone had sorted out very well and it was a cracker, but I had to adapt pod air filters for it I remember as you couldn't get replacement parts. The Jap stuff of the day was just ultra reliable, oil tight, electric start, cheaper, etc.Someone brought a Honda 4 into a local bike shop with 50,000 ks on it and they thought they'd take the head off to have a look.Everything was fine, so they buttoned it up and off it went for another 50,000ks.Unheard of for a brit bike or Harley at the time

Thatcher didn't come to power till 1979, the British motorcycle industry was pretty much on life support long before that.

Yes but she was approached about a tariff to help much like the Reagan administration did but she wouldn't support it and opted to let the market dictate the outcome.

The British motorcycle industry was dead by 1970. "The BCG report provided the justification for Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s Labour government to cease subsidising the motorcycle industry, which had absorbed nearly £24 million of public funds since 1973." Read the whole thing, it's short. http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/knowledge/socialscience/stevekoerner/

Triumph never went under all together but only a limited number were made for a few years while they re-tooled. They really started going down hill in 1972 on with the crappy OIF bikes. I have gone through a few of those and made them what they should have been as best I could with the design. I especially didn't like the way the shift mechanisim worked.

I have an old copy of an "all Triumph" issue of "Bike" magazine, that has a couple of articles by him in it.
OOops! Apologies again. It was "Back Street Heroes" not "Bike" magazine. My mind really is going away by itself.

This is the blurb with the photos,
David Beckham stars in Belstaff film 0 BY MARK HINCHLIFFEIN BY MANUFACTURER · MOTORBIKE NEWS · MOTORBIKES · TRIUMPH — 11 SEP, 2015
Former soccer star and long-time motorcycle fan David Beckham stars in a short Hollywood film to promote British motorcycle clothing brand Belstaff and Triumph Motorcycles.
While he rides several different models in the film, one of the bikes looks like a customised version of the upcoming water-cooled Bonneville expected to be unveiled at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan in November.
The bike has upside-down forks, a larger fuel tank, twin brake discs and what looks like a radiator.

The short film, called Outlaws, has a distinctly Quentin Tarantino feel and has a large injection of Hollywood from the producer Liv Tyler to big-name stars such as Harvey Keitel and Cathy Moriarty, plus up-and-coming star Katherine Waterston.
David Beckham and Katherine Waterston David Beckham and Katherine Waterston
Beckham has been a motorcycle fan for years but has only been able to dabble in his passion seriously since he retired from professional football in 2013.
While he owns a Ducati Desmosedici RR, Confederate F131 Hellcat Combat and a custom-built 1940s chopper with a S&S Knucklehead 93″ engine, he has long been associated with Triumph.
Last year, he rode through South America on a Triumph Scrambler with friends for a TV documentary.
This time he rides several different Triumphs in the short film where he seems to play a stuntman in some exotic circus featuring bearded ladies and a tattooed man.
The film was shot in Mexico and has been produced to showcase Belstaff gear. It will be released on September 22.

Looks like they even put something where the points used to be. Would be great if it was like HD and the electronic ignition could be deleted and a points ignition could be installed. Save a bunch of money if the CDI failed.

I'm actually a little excited in this new iteration of the Bonnie. Glad when they make it here so I can throw a leg over one.
