Just the perfect preload, trimming the spacer tube as much as the the intim valve takes up and the oil level at spec gets you close, I fiddled around with both and got the forks as close as need be for me and I'm quite anal, so it took some experimentation. IIRC, the spacer tube had to gain +5/16" from the recommended cut and the oil +1/2" higher. Use your original springs, I tried progressives with the valves and I couldn't get the forks dialed in for nothing.
