So I've been looking into these for a while now, they are not too common here in the U.S. but apparently they are well known in the U.K.? Does anyone have any light they can shed on these, my yard is huge and flat and open and just ready for a pool like this

Angela and I already discussed having visitors once we get a pool. We decided that nobody is coming over. Ever.

We had one back at my Father's house back in the chlorine days.It was an AWFUL lot of work.
Of course pools have come a long way since then as regards daily upkeep and maintenance. That natural pool looks good.

Enjoy.

When I were a youngster we called them ponds.

I understand your interest in a such a pool. But I seriously doubt that there is any less maintenance on a "natural pool" than a more conventional pool kept clean with chemicals. I've got some friends that did the cool pond thing in their back yard. Just to look at, mind you, not to swim in. They loved building it, and the first few weeks, had all of us over to admire it. Then, as the summer wore on, they found out how much maintenance it REALLY was! They were always checking the ph levels and a bunch of other things. Cleaning filters, replacing pumps, the list was endless! The gave it up in the fall and vowed, never again!

I've seen some of these guys, good call!

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

the plants are supposed to filter the water. I've wanted some sort of water feature in the back yard anyway, might as well be something I can get in and swim around in instead of just a bird bath sized fountain. obviously I need to know a lot more about it and get some insight from people that have one

Know some folks doing this now. But he is in the pond maintenance business. Check with some of your local pond management companies to see what problems exist in your area and how to overcome them. I'm looking out over a beautiful pond right now that used to allow swimming. Now there are 3 known alligators in it. No swimming for me anymore. There are also biological concerns to consider. The lake in our neighborhood used to be a great spot for swimming, fishing and skiing. But a friend picked up a microbe of some sort in his ear. It went to his brain and he died. Buzzkill huh?

I know nothing about natural swimming pools,'cept the swimming hole in the creek that borders my place. I do know of two separate family residences who got into fabricated naturally balanced ponds. Both entities seem to chase imbalance problems with a bucket of money, buy special reeds, then expensive fish to balance the effects of the reeds, constant PH issues, lilly pads taking over. Then the pond expert promises your pond is close, but now you need to introduce just one more additional change and you'll find Kismet. The whole thing reminded me of owning a 20 year old medium sized boat, parked at a Salt Water marina. Throw buckets of money and time at a never ending quest to get ahead of it. Your results may vary and good luck.

The way we did it was dig a big hole with a tractor of choice put clay O T he bottom and sand on that leave a shallow perimeter, put some ****** willows and lily pads around the shallow parts and let it rain over the winter to fill her up. Come summer jump in and swim. Normally we would dig a pond to serve as a water cystern for live stock. In the summer we would put a pump out in the deep part and let it spray the water from the bottom to the shallow part with the plants.
