Just curious of the 1000s of members we have how many are riding new bikes. As in new from the dealer 2014-2015 riders of America and Speedmaster?
I feel like maybe we are not attracting new bike owners to the forum or maybe there are not that many new bike owners. Either way I hope I am wrong.

I don't think the Speedy and Americas are selling as well as they used to.I have no figures, just a gut feeling. The 1,100cc engine if/when it comes may change things.

I agree. We have put on about 100 users this year but about 60% have not posted. Of those that have posted we have about 150 post total for this years new users. And there is no way of knowing if those new members bought new bikes. I know many bought older bikes from the post "New to me TBA etc.
The public has moved to more HP and bigger motors I am afraid. 13 years ago the America and Speedmaster may have been a new idea. IMHO they have become iconic in their very own category now.

let's be completely honest here... since the inception of the cone of silence, traffic of ALL other sections has dropped off, especially the lounge. if I were a new member that just joined in the past few months (they can't even see the Cone), I would think this forum is dead as fuk and lose interest quickly.

A place where old members argue about religion, politics, and pick on each other. Has absolutely nothing to do with the motorcycle forum.
But Dave, If we were not talking those things on the main forum before I don't see how it has an effect on the forum now.
The searchable stuff on the forum about jetting, carbs, CDI, Oil etc is covered over years of long discussion. I think the 0 posters just use the search feature and learn what they need.

there were plenty of threads started with current events as the topic back before the cone. now it just about only gets posted there, and it gets nasty 9 out of 10 times. and my point is, without new threads to keep the interest of new members, they may not stick around to do much besides look at what kind of pipes are available and then bounce out for good

You could be right. No, wait, you have never been more wrong, but you may be right, no, your are right. On second thought I don't know who is right. The 0 posters are allowed to post up things like "Hi from wherever" Just got a new bike. Then they can make new post.

Now, about the bikes. I think the earlier models have a bit of a cachet since they were Triumph's first foray into the cruiser market, combining cruiser styling with legendary Triumph handling and that's what really drove the site in the early days. The newer models are the logical development of the line adding new tech and yet keeping with the original premise. So, those of us with the early bikes should be careful not to fall into the "Harley trap", ya know what I mean? I may never own a newer SM/America (but I am seriously thinking about adding a Tiger 800), but the tech must continue to evolve and be encouraged. Hey the riding is where it's at and that's the common thread among us.

That "other" site also has a big following and possibly keeps new members there thru just being more active due to covering all Triumphs?

Although I do have access to the Cone I thought it was not a good idea to add that forum. And I stated my feelings about it early on.

As a new member here's my two cents, I thought that the common interest here is the motor, 790 or 865, different states of tune perhaps but pretty much the same, and could well be the last air cooled motor made by triumph. Stick it in a package that just screams TRIUMPH and thats what brings us together. Its only normal that a model thats been going this long will have some changes made along the way, and you cant please all the people all the time. Personally I love em all. As for the forum, there is just so much information available here you could surf around forever and still have trouble finding what your after let alone trying to get a post in. I hope it goes on for a long time to come even if the old air cooled motor doesnt because that motor is unique in the world of cruisers. Just my little bit.

I was for it in the beginning because I saw how an un-moderated site works on the Thunderbird1600 forum. But I didn't think it would turn into a political forum and get personal like it does and people calling each other names. They can say whatever they like over a the TB 1600 site but there is hardly ever any political discussions or arguing with other members. And when someone gets out of line the members handle it and it usually goes away instead of moderators getting involved and deleting threads. But I still hang out here more because of the friends I have made at rallies. I think the America/Speedmasters were unique back when this site started but now like someone else said there are more choices out there even within the Triumph line and people move on from time to time to other bikes. It's kind of natural progression.
One member here said he doesn't even post here anymore but just posts on the cone. I may take a self imposed time out from there for a while and get back to basics and try to post more on the lounge.

Like Peter_AU as a new user for example. Has many post, came on and engaged in conversation. Cloudy does a few hundred post a year. 60% of the members signed up in 2015 have 0 post. The average I think is about 6 post for the year with that group of around 100.
Look at Bigbill and Pes. 10 years on the forum. In that one year from their registration, look at their profile and look at mine. 1800 users went on in 12 months then it doubled again by 2007. Many of those same users, not me, carry the forum discussions. We need the new people to step up and own this forum. They need to get involved.
I am afraid they are here in numbers only, I am afraid they are not riding Triumph America and Speedmaster. The forum participation from new bike owners is not supporting the idea of good sales of our bikes.

It had me fooled on rejoining recently.......what's the idea behind the Cone? Was there some big debate and this was the outcome? On the subject of new TBA/ Speedys......I think the model is nearing the end of its production life, maybe. But recent restyles have left me cold...its grown to my mind into an ugly duckling.....used to be the essence of what a Triumph was.....lightly styled and looking harmonious.....looks more like a harmonium these days. I think the styling department need some new spectacles. Al

I still post in the lounge but doesn't seem to get the action it used to. I also check the rest of the forum and give input when needed, again not as many questions or modifications going on anymore. I am in the process of collecting parts for a new chopper but it's slow and I have tons of other stuff to do so slow going. I am also putting a frame under my truck and the new frame needs a few repairs too.

In my humble opinion The Cone turned into exactly what I suspected it would. A political bashfest with finger pointing and name calling. Several no it all's that could never see the other persons view points or understand the concept that their own view points are simply theirs and might not be correct. These are members that have/had similar interests in Triumphs and those same interests brought them to the BA.Com family. With the addition of the cone it seems some of those same members now could not stay in the same room with one another.
Mike, member here since April 2003
Speaking of the TB1600 forum. I like their lightly moderated forums, people speak their minds for the most part but no one is arguing back and forth. Probably because their rarely talking politics, their talking about their passion, Triumph Motorcycles.

Everybody expected that to happen. The great thing about going to a forum or any area of a forum is you don't have to go there. If you go there, get your feelings hurt, and lash out, nobody made you read it. We are in that room for real every day of our lives. There are always different opinions.
But your post has absolutely not a thing to do with getting newer members posting and making BA.com a more active place. 8000 members and about 80 posters is what I am asking about. I have ridden my bikes all over the country. Was thrilled to do SWTF twice and even had a good time being rejected for weather once or twice. I had the honor of meeting and making two friends that later died on their Triumphs. They are connections made on this board. Two weeks ago Dwight and I talked for 30 minutes on the phone. have not seen him since 2011. But the bonds are still there.
I don't think it is our (people here for years) responsibility to keep it going, fun, or interesting. It is everybody's responsibility. If the few 500 folks that joined but didn't post for last 3 years even once don't care, its not my fault. I love Triumph motorcycles and everybody that loves being on two wheels. 0 posters have to leave those ranks, join in with the discussions and make some of their own. Or not.
This forum contains technical stuff. But it also contains friends you have yet to meet and bonds waiting to happen.

Hey Ron, You just proved my point.
I too have been all over this beautiful country on my bikes. I was at SWTF in 2011, were you there? I just don't remember you for some reason.

Well said.
I have only one point. I have bantered lively in debate with a few of members here and you would think that we hated each other. However when I met some of them in person we had a good time. We even had a good laugh or two about some of those debates. What happens in the forum of which we don't speak stays there. I like every member of this forum, and appreciate the differences. What a bori g place it would be if we were all the same.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Differing opinions do not exclude friendship if you are adult about it. I rarely agree with Ron or Rich for instance but I have no animosity towards them. I state my opinion and they theirs and I think we agree to disagree. I find it annoying at times but that's the way it is. I would still meet them and talk and go for a ride. I like the fact we can express those opinions on part of this site, I think it gives a complete view of each other, sometimes not a pretty one but in the real world things are not so pretty all the time. I think most of us act as adults in there and most don't resort to name calling but at times some do.

See, we have an emotionally challenged little horse and a dog with 33 personalities getting along.
But are the newer bikes not selling well or are the newer riders not looking to join a discussion forum, or both?
Maybe the discussion forum format itself is a dying or dead technology and Instacrack and Facebook have taken over. Can we maybe be reduced to a pic or two and one sentence comments with a lol on it.
I hope not.

I think the instagram and facebook formats have a lot to do with it, no attention span anymore. The younger people also are very self-absorbed, they are the "me" generation, no respect or consideration for others.

I think the instagram and facebook formats have a lot to do with it, no attention span anymore. The younger people also are very self-absorbed, they are the "me" generation, no respect or consideration for others.
Yep. Plenty of Facebook pages now for Speedys,America's and others, people just ask their questions there. I am constantly pointing them to this site but few seem to bother.

Facebook lacks a lot of the charm of this forum such as the search feature. I only go there to see the pics of bikes uploaded.

If someone needs help with things that go on with their bike, a forum can't be beat in my opinion. There is a lot of knowledge here that I have been the beneficiary of, and it is definitely appreciated. Facebook or instagram cannot compete in terms of information availability.
I'm still not understanding the talk about "the cone" - was it an edict of the owners of this forum or another forum to stop discussing sensitive topics? Is it a place on this forum to discuss such topics?

A cone of silence. We argue in private about politics, religion and call one another names if we disagree. It actually gets pretty silly because nobody ever changes their mind on political or social issues.
Politics, Religion or anything that upsets anybody is against the Acceptable Use Policy of BA.com. In the past as a thread got heated and politics or religion got mentioned the thread would be locked.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.
