Well it is a beautiful day here in Hershey PA and I decided to ride into woik this morning instead of drive. Left about 45 minutes early and of course, took the long way in, of course I ended up being 5 minutes late.
So, as I am accustom to, I always wave to other bikes and almost always am greeted the same way by others in passing. One thing I have noticed lately that kinda pisses me off is all the lame ****** riders who are either too stuffy, clueless, or just think they are too good to motion back. I also hate that lame nod (HD riders most often). The guys on the fat custom bikes and BMW riders seem to be too good as well.
Anyone else notice this?

I love this topic. It gets posted once in a while...and the range of responses are quite comical.
I forget who said it - but someone mentioned that he prefers to wave to other bikers, like Forrest waved to Lt. Dan on the pier, as his shrimp boat passed.

I only wave when I am under 200MPH, faster than that its too dangerous to take my hand off the bar.

Saw a guy on a Sportster yesterday winding out the gears, so I just walked a bit faster and said "hi".

Oh man, what a great scene in a great movie. Didnt he dive off the boat then a swim to the pier? Then in the background, somehow, the boat managed to turn its self around and crash into another pier. LMAO just thinking about that

I too have noticed that you rarely get a wave back from the Hardley riders. I tend to always wait for a harley rider to wave to me. If they do i wave back. If they dont, who cares.

Most people around here wave if they can regardless of the ride. Yesterday I was out on the highway and saw bike about 1/2 mile behind me. I could tell he was a HD guy and was trying to catch up to see what I had. I finally let him catch up after ten miles and waved at him thinking he was going to pass, but he pulled in behind. Later he went to turn off to my right and waved. He had a nice looking deep blue HD. I think he was a little surprised to see the Speedy.

And then the cage in back of you tells the cops after the accident. He hand signaled for a turn. Yeah, hello... Another superstition ...

I wave as much as is safely possible to other motorcyclists regarless of style or brand (no scooters though). If they don't wave back, that is their problem. I don't worry or think about it. Maybe it will give them something to think about, maybe not. I did my part, the rest is upto them.

I have talked to some people that ride and they really have no clue about waving at all.

I don't feel that you have to wave at every bike on the road. It isnt that I'm too good to, it's just a pain in the arss. I ride for my enjoyment not to be part of some motorcycle brotherhood. I drive a ford truck but don't feel I need to wave at them either.

Most Harley riders around here wave unless they're riding a $40,000 piece of raked out assjewelry or they're flying colors (and even most of the gang/club types wave).

I wave at everybody. I waved at a kid on a dirtbike once and he was so surprised he nearly dumped it. I don't care, though; if you're not in a cage you're one of "us." Of course, I curse at them like a sailor if they don't wave back.

I wave alot but I hate when I wave and some rub on a Harley doesn't wave back. It makes me feel like an idiot for waving.

Observation: No one waves at Daytona bike week. Probabaly because you'd be waving every 2 seconds. However, at Laconia bike week you get tired of waving.

I think it's that way at most large events. Certainly that was the case at Sturgis. There are just so many bikes and you'd be waving so much it becomes a safety hazard.

Is there any kind of history behind the wave, or is it just a courtisy?

Its an American thing, the British used to Nod their head. They were smarter than to take their hands off the bars. Indian Motorcycles in the 50s fostered a brotherhood type thing where you would wave to acknowlege your brother Indian rider. It just spread from there. Nothing special about the development. It became almost mandatory in the 60s because " You meet the nicest people on a Honda".

We could make up some mysterious reason here! Spread the story through the web and I bet in a few years it would be taken as fact lol.

There are getting to be a 'LOT' of bikes around here. On a nice Sunday afternoon I can ride from Stillwater up to Taylors Falls (24 miles) and see hundreds of bikes. Frankly waving gets a little tiresome. About half of them wave.

I've thought about putting a hand silouette on a spring and taping it to my mirror so it just bobs up and down at everbody. That brings up a technical question. Lessee, do I want the 'Hey!' wave where you just open your hand above the grip, or do I want that 'Cool' wave where I rest my hand on my thigh and very subtly point one finger at the ground? Decisions, decisions. Maybe I could make both kinds. Wow, maybe I could sell them! I'll call it the 'AutoWaver'. Maybe Brent would carry them, or Dennis Kirk. This could be something big.

Hey Stone, that there comes under the "personal choice" heading . I have nothing against tattoos, why, some of my best friends have tattoos . I choose not to. That's personal choice too.
I didn't write those, I just cribbed them from other sites. But I think the tattoo comment on the Harley rider series was aimed at the posers who label everything with officially licensed and endorsed HD logos (including their skin) and think they're too cool to wave at anybody they deem unworthy.

We tend not to do the wave as the right hand(in UK) is the hand opposing the other side fo road therefore ..... raise of RH and throttle slams shut.....decel.. wobble .. grab throttle again lurch open and drag of down road...... easier to nod!!!
Cheers, Mike
