From Financial Times today.

Worker killed in Volkswagen robot accident
7 hours ago

A technician has been killed by a robot at a Volkswagen plant near Kassel, Germany.

A 21 year old external contractor was installing the robot together with a colleague when he was struck in the chest by the robot and pressed against a metal plate. He later died of his injuries, reports Chris Bryant, the FT's Frankfurt correspondent.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation into how the accident occurred.

Robot-related fatalities are rare in western production plants as robots are kept behind safety cages to prevent accidental contact with humans.

In this instance the contractor was standing inside the safety cage when the accident occurred.

The second employee was outside the cage and was unharmed.

A Volkswagen spokesman stressed that the robot was not one of the new generation of lightweight collaborative robots that work side-by-side with workers on the production line and forgo safety cages.

VW said the robot had not suffered a technical defect.

When I got to the end and they mentioned that the robot had not suffered a technical defect, for a moment I wondered... how long will it be before they ascribe human feelings to these machines? Suffered? Probably just a translation anomaly. Yeah, that's it.

How long before "technical defect" is replaced by "injury"?

More than likely an error in the code for the robot or he was just in the way of the robot and it was doing what it was supposed to do. That's why they put cages around the robots, so people won't get in the way and get hurt.

I wonder, did the technician follow the standard procedures for working inside the safety cage? I'd guess not. I'll bet the investigation will show that he failed to observe established safety protocol. It happens all the time. I used to be a safety officer and investigated injury accidents and almost without fail people got hurt by taking short cuts because it was just too much hassle to do it right.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

When you are installing equipment, you very seldom have things locked out like you would if it is in production and maintenance is being performed.

Let that be a lesson to you. When in contact with a robot, never say 01100101101 in reference to its mother!
