Have any of you had to replace the tripometer knob on your America?

I ordered the knob, and a screw that was to be used with it, from Bike Bandit.
I ordered straight off the schematic without looking at my speedometer. Why should I? I figured there's only one speedometer for the '01's through '??.
Well, when I went to install the new part, it doesn't fit. Doesn't even come close!
The "finger" part (end) looks correct, but would need the "shaft" end to be about an inch and a half longer to reach the metal shaft inside the speedometer, and the metal shaft inside the speedometer does NOT have a threaded hole (or ANY hole, for that matter) in it's end.

Today, I went to our local factory dealer, and their schematic shows the same picture as BB.

They are contacting Triumph for an answer, but I'm not knowing if I'll get a satisfactory response.

Yes, I can easily modify it, by epoxying a thin brass tube over the metal shaft inside the speedometer, and epoxying the plastic knob over the other end, but I'd rather not.

Anyone experience this???

No I've not. What I have experienced is Triumph shipping the wrong parts. Or parts missing from a "kit". It's got bad recently with TRI USA.
Did this little Triumph gizmo you ordered from BB take nearly two weeks to deliver?

It's not speeding till you get pulled over.

I don't remember. Two weeks seems about right.
I don't blame BB. They shipped what I ordered, and it matched the enlarged picture, which matched the picture the Triumph dealer had on their computer.
I believe it's incorrect info. straight from Triumph.

I did have to replace mine, but I believe the metal rod almost stuck out of the side of the speedo and definitely had a threaded hole....that was on my 2005

My riding buddy Porter ordered a new knob for his 2001 Bonneville and got the same part which is not correct; there was no other choice in he parts fiche. Triumph must have changed early on to a screw mount from a press fit and I have no answer on how to source the proper item.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but can anyone with an '05 (or earlier) America just take a quick "look-see" at the exposed end of their little plastic tripometer re-set knob, and tell me IF there is a "Phillips Head" screw in it's end???

I know of no other Americas in Orlando to go to see. (Americans, yes, a few. But Americas, no)

Picture of my 03 America. You can see the knob on the speedo but that's it. Don't have the bike anymore so I can't check for you.

I have a 05 and a 06 set of speedos right here, and they look just like Gregger s, just a black plastic knob, fused onto a chrome pin.

My '02 has a small phillips screw holding the knob on. I can turn the knob and reset the tripmeter with a very small screw driver.

So Ryk, when you look in the end of your plastic knob, you don't see a phillips head screw like James here has???

Mea Culpa, after re inspection with a flashlight this time, there is a little bitty phillips down in there, about 3/8ths" down in there. Without a flash light, it looked like a typical cheap plastic knob melted or glued on. You'll need a phillips about as small as they make them to back that out. I have two functional speedos if it comes to that point, and you need one. PM me Erle, I'll hook you up.

Ok, this kinda sums it all up.
1) Bike Bandit's schematic shows the plastic knob with screw.
2) Triumph's schematic shows the plastic knob with screw.
3) Triumph and the dealers words were;
"...Good afternoon. I went ahead and forwarded your message on to Triumph
North America. Their assessment, based on the photographs, is that the
internal part of the reset knob is broken. It has a flat edge with threads
inside of it to channel the knob, which appear to broken on yours (the
shiny portion indicates this). Their recommendation is that the
speedometer be replaced, as there is no way to fix the internal portion
(where the knob threads into). A new speedometer is $289.46 plus tax.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance on this matter.

Sincerely and respectfully,

"Sincerely and respectfully"!??? REALLY!???
How is stickin' it up my ass to the tune of $300 respectful??? lol
Does anybody really need a tripometer THAT damn bad? lol NOT ME!

Anyway, went to the hobby shop, got a 12" tube of brass for $1.75 that just fit over the remaining metal shaft, and slightly reamed out the plastic knobs hole to allow the brass tube to slip into it. Measurements showed I needed about a 2" length. It was a tight, press fit into the plastic knob, and sucked a couple drops of epoxy into the other end of the brass tube like a straw, and slipped it over the shaft, yesterday.

Today revealed a perfect fix!

Kinda pissed I'm stuck with 10" of brass tube that I don't need.

PS. I believe the speedometers are everywhere on-line for about $150

Brass that YOU don't need, erle?

Odds are that you'll have something cool fabbed up from that scrap in no time.
