I’m pissed. The cheap piece of crap Triumph chrome seat rail just broke again…

You are not alone. I have suffered from the same. Mine broke as well and the chrome is rusted in less than one year. Perhaps one day we will find a cure.

The pisser is I like the look of the seat rail. I've had one on my bike since about 2003. The first few I replaced under warrantee, and after that had a friend weld it for me. The current seat rail I have has been welded 3 times and it still breaks. Oh well, took it off and put the rear seat back on.

Not just the rails but the heat shields too, I had to weld the ones on Wendys bike multiple times. My welds never broke but they would break again in a different spot.

That sounds as if the new breaks are occurring at what is called the "heat affected zone boundary". Weld metal grain is all askew, similar to the metal in a casting, the rod of the seat rail has grain like wood in the direction it was drawn during manufacture. Where the grain changes is a stress riser. A normalizing heat treat after the initial build process would probably cure this common problem and this complaint/posting would never even exist. This is a build flaw that is ultimately Triumphs fault and they should replace them until they get a clue and review/change the process.

The seat rails remind me of the early issues with the chrome chain guard. When they first came out, most of them broke on the mounts. Went through a few of those also. Then Triumph used thicker metal on the mounts. Solved the problem and never had another issue with it.

Welding can weaken metal by over heating it and making it brittle depending on the metal content of course. Two things can be done to prevent this, preheat the metal to be welded or post heat the metal afterward and allow it to cool slowly. Heat treating is tricky business, but I recommend both and then sending it out chrome. Oh if you don't remove the chrome from the area that is to be welded the weld will not hold

As I said it was not the heated area, I know what I am doing when welding. I also know how to heat treat as well as harden and case harden metal. It was a manufacture issue, the shields on my pipes have never had an issue.

He dropped his keys on the table but this time it occured to him all the moments that have been wasted by repeating the same ole mundane behaviors day after day.
