I don't have an alarm but I sometimes use an armored master lock.Doesn't matter since they will just lift it into the back of a truck and drive away with it if they really want it.

No alarm feature but I do have a disc lock. Have used it when traveling to keep anyone from moving the bike. Mostly used in the motel parking lot. Like noted, if your motorcycle is targeted by "real" thieves, they will just pick it up and take it. Mine is a Master Lock brand, but they all seem to be similar. Do check the size of the pin to make sure it fits a hole in brake disc. Not sure if this is the one I have but it looks like this http://www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-8303DPS-Disc-Brake/dp/B0009V1WR0

The trick thieves use with fork and disc locks is to pick up the front of the bike, place and secure a skateboard under the tire and move the bike to where it can be discretely loaded up and trucked away. Sometimes, ya just can't win.

I just bought a disk lock on line a couple of weeks ago. Simply googled "Disk brake lock". A numbeer of products came up, but most of the "quality" locks were $60 or so, without an alarm. I found a "cheapo, Chineese" lock WITH alarm for about $15. I read the reviews and bought it. Seems to be fine to me.

After ripping the right front brake caliper off I will NEVER use a disc lock again!
That's when the alarm thing gets handy! Goes off when you get the bike off the stand.

Actually, I could totally see me doing the same thing! And that was the ONLY thing different that I could see between the "el cheapo" lock I bought and the "better" quality locks that were advertised; that is, the more expensive locks came with a "reminder cable", that attaches to the lock and then you loop the other end around the handlebars so you see it and don't forget to take it off. Simple enough. I fashioned a small loop out of coat hanger, epoxied it to the lock and got a cheap plastic cord to attach to. Honestly, my el cheapo lock looks as good as anything else I saw and it was 1/5 the cost!

I think a visual reminder hanging on the H.bars would be a good idea. I could see myself, forgetting the lock. Sometimes I can't remember my name until two cups of coffee have kicked in.

Xena here. My fork lock broke early on, so I needed something. Like the others say, it's only a deterrent. A bright yellow deterrent with a noisy alarm. I always carry it with me, but I don't use it enough (a bad habit, I know).
I've always been fascinated with locks, so at any given time, I've got 3 or 4 good ones with me. I have been known to use more than one if I'm going to be around a high theft area and away from the bike for any length of time. Bike shows/events worry me the most.
If you go with a disc lock, be sure to measure the pin size to make sure it'll fit.

I saw Rich's "cheapo" lock and honestly, it was as good, and did the same thing as my Xena. The plastic cord easily served to remind the lock is in place making this an effective option.
Live to love, love to live.
