Guys, 2010 Thunderbird 1700, 13,100 miles I've been holding off to update until I knew what was actually going to happen. With much hesitation I put the Thunderbird in the shop a week ago Wednesday with a lot of noise in the top end. A new Triumph dealer but a long time dealership of other brands. I was thinking it was possibly cam chain or the tensioner. Of course they were not sure what was causing the noise so I ask them to check valve clearances. Three valves slightly out so that cant be it! We called Triumph tech line and their response was piston slap. They told the dealer to send in a warranty claim and Triumph would probably approve it as this has been an issue on a few of the early 1700 designs. Keep in mind the bike is 5 years old with no extended warranty. I'm the second owner. Immediately Triumph denied the claim. So my dealer goes to bat for me several heated conference calls back and fourth. It just so happens the sales manager was to be in Atlanta on Wednesday and had a face to face with Triumph and got the claim approved parts and labor! New pistons new sleeves, all the associated gaskets etc. I am fn stoked, let's just hope they don't F up something. I should have the bike back on Saturday May the 9th if all goes well. I should be riding Tara to the Georgia Rally on Wednesday the 13th. If not my beautiful red head awaits patiently in her heated garage to carry me once again. FYI, I'm having the cam chain and the CC tensioner replaced at my cost while they are in there. Fingers crossed !!! If you're ever in the Knoxville area stop in and see these guys. Knoxville Dealer

That's great news Mike. I hope she'll be as good as new.

Ya know Mike, bringing a few pizzas to the dealership the day you pick up your bike would be a nice gesture to show your appreciation for this great service you're getting from the guys there. (...great story...nice to hear!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight, were on the same page. Parts are to be there Tuesday, I'm taking fresh donuts Tuesday morning for the sales team and the service team. This probably a $2000.00 claim. 10 hours of labor. The engine has to come out and cases split

If not abused, and if properly maintained, manufacturers should back their product, even if out of warranty, even if second owner. Especially on expensive repairs involving the motor.
If a whole generation of anything had a stigma and all suffered from the same failure, then who would want to buy that brand's product again?
I'm real proud of LEXUS for all of the "enhanced warranty" programs, and customer support programs they have instilled over the last few years.
They're investing millions of dollars in these programs, and keeping these cars on the road. Building their legacy. These cars and SUVs will be on the road long after their peers from other brands have been long relegated to the junk yards.
I'm glad they're stepping up for you, Mike, both the dealership, and TRIUMPH. That should pay them both dividends down the road, right?

Keith you are so right. Interesting enough when the dealer brought in the Triumph line two years ago I had a long conversation with the sales manager about my history of ownership, the many friends I know who own the brand and service in general. I told him a lot of owners felt Triumphs service departments were lacking in knowledge and quality techs. He promised their goal was to do the best job they could to make sure the service team was a quality team and not just tire changers. When my problem came up I let it play out. I didn't get pissed and start acting like I was entitled to something keeping in mind I've probably never spent more than 300 dollars total in the dealership. I suppose he felt they needed to make a statement and they have! Here's hoping they get it right as this is a job they or most dealerships don't do very often I'm sure. There're shooting to have it back to me on Saturday the 9th and I'm heading to Birmingham on Wednesday.

Welp, I'll be rolling the 03 for the Ga Rally, she's got some quirks but I love her anyway. Boy's at the dealer having some delays with the 2010. Could not get the rotor pulled to split the case, needed a Triumph specialty tool. Two days later it came in, they stripped it! It's not much of a design. I was there this morning in the shop talking with the tech, he's going to try using a regular automotive puller. Hopefully that will work, if not it's wait another two days for a replacement crap tool from Triumph.

Ack, I envy the freedom. I'll be leaving for Texas at 4am Wed morning. Y'all have a great time running those hills.
