...besides giving it to Brent. I just got a new Palm Tungsten TX (built-in wi fi) with part of my tax refund and if you're reading this you can see what I'm trying out with the first free hotspot that I've found. Call me a RUB if you want but this will be a nice gadget to carry in my jacket, especially if I can download maps to it (besides carrying emergency info and contact numbers). Definitely money well spent.

Tax refund ... tax refund ... no, never heard of them ... !

Must say though, my self-assesment tax bill at the end of January was , MUCH lower than I expected ...

It paid to swap accountants to a guy who will work for me rather than the taxman (and whose bill was ¼ of the previous guys ..)

Step one: Actually do my taxes.

Step two, THEN worry about spending it:) I really want some 440's...

So, You let the gov'ment use your money for free? Lynn and I? We have to write a check to the US Treasury for $56.00.

Don't let the IRS use YOUR money. The best refund is $10.00. Money market yields are at about 3.5% right now. Adjust your withholding and put your mula to work for you. Stop financing the likes of the Butcher of Chapaquitic.

Those 440s are gonna require almost four years of refunds at that rate.

Straight into the savings account where all spare/extra money goes. The wife and I look very hard into our future and retirement and want to be sure we will be comfortable. Everything we own is paid for except for the house which we plan on having paid off in 2010. Just bought the wife a new car two weeks ago and the dealer asked how long we wanted to finance for and he was somewhat shocked when I whipped out the check book and paid it off right then and there. I dont like paying anymore for something than I have to. Debbie and I refinanced the house a couple of years ago and turned a thirty year mortgage into a fifteen year deal and decreased our payment $100.00. We are now making double payments with the extra going to principal. What a great feeling !!!!!!!

I actually planned pretty good this year and didn't give the government an interest free loan. Paid myself throughout the year.

Refund!?! Oh, you mean the money the IRS gives you back because you paid too much to begin with! Blah.. I just got a letter from the IRS saying I OWE them another $10K and change, not including penalties and interest.. from my 2004 return Fortunately, they are wrong and I really only owe them about $400 due to a missing 1099-INT form. I haven't even started worrying about my 2005 return yet, but I'm sure it will result in yet another check going TO the IRS, not the other way around.

As others have pointed out, the best refund is no refund. And as Moe mentioned, if you don't do anything but put the cash in a bank, you can get a few dollars more for it. Even the dismal interest rate on saving accounts is better than nothing, 3.5% is a little better than that, and while I prefer to invest in higher yeild areas (getting around 22% average this year), anything you get is better than squat.

Cheers,
Brad

Paid off my bike. But it should be the last tax refund I get because I pumped up my exemptions to keep from giving the government a tax-free loan.

I guess I am bucking the trend again, but I prefer to put it into Uncle Sams hands for a year and then get it back. Keeps the wife from spending it, We can't save squat unless it is not in our hands in the first place. I know it is wrong, but that is a fact in my household. $2400 back, going to California for our 20th anniversary. May even rent a bike while we are there. TR.

If that is the case, then I thank you for my trip to California. Could not come from a better source than this forum. At least now you know that the money that you had to send to the Uncle went to a good purpose. I will try to spend your money wisely, Bartender..... TR

I'm going to split it with my wife and spend my half any way she tells me to. When my Ebay pipes arrived ($31 plus shipping), she naturally beat me home and asked me for the umteenth time "how much have you spent on that bike?"

If anything, I'm the one bucking the trend. I think the vast majority of people treat their tax refund check as a "bonus," when in reality it was their money all along. I've gotten fairly good at saving so I don't feel I need to use that as a savings plan. As always, YMMV.

Yes, a tach, yes. Yet the ride on the 440s is soooo sweeet! For the extra two c notes, get the 440s and ride on.

Maybe get an iPod and end the rest to my crdit card company. (New Speedmaster Bank of Texas)
Since I just got married last year and paid a ton of mortgage taxes and such, I get a big check this time. All I gotta do is send the finished forms in.

My tax refund consists of a check made payable to Internal Revenue. It appears they don't think I pay enough. Glad to help them out. I have no idea what they are doing with my tax refund I sent them. I am sure its something very needed, like a new limo for a senator.

No refund here. Have to pay $258 more. I hope they don't spend it all in one place.

Gee spent mine already. Had the bike serviced, got some new stuff from Brent (Chrome Rear Brake Housing cover), new grips, and bought a 5 string Spector Bass and an 87 Warwick Streamer Bass.

With tax time fast approaching, there has been a lot of those 'tax tip' type news reports on the tube lately. I was watching the other night and they reported that the IRS has over $2 Billion in unclaimed refunds from 2002. That is just from people who were owed a refund but didn't file. There are also tens of thousands of refund checks that were undeliverable that have yet to be claimed.. and all this for just a single year, with other years being about the same amount.. at that rate, I think the IRS could buy us all another round just with the interest alone!!

Cheers,
Brad

I reckon I'm running later than all y'all. I haven't finished the numbers yet, but there is usually some coming back. Like TR6, I use the bi-monthly withdrawals as a way to keep my wife from spending it.

I have a good long list of I-want-a stuff but this year it is going into the remodeling project. That's OK, I get mints from Brent every chance I get anyway, just to irritate Marlene. She is getting to that shaking-the-head-in-disbelief stage now.
