That was my post. Got an A4 sheet of fine aluminium mesh... Removed graters & cut the mesh to size using scissors... Offered up the mesh to the graters... Fitted to bike...

Think yours looks better. Will have to get some fine mesh.

It was cracked yeah. Must of had an explosion in there at some point in it's life. I plastic welded it up to repair about a year ago & it's held together nicely. It doesn't look pretty but it works.

OK, I like the fine mesh a lot better, the other size did look like VW stickers, but to change the subject, you say you "plastic welded" the cracks in the airbox? I need to know more about this. These dangged squirrels just chewed up the black plastic fuel tanks on one of my mowers and my pressure washer. JB weld did not hold. Thank you. I'm diving into some Costa Rican* and a Little Debbie**, but I'll wait for the info. *, **, coffee and a snack, silly

Hi Wade, Get a small drill bit & drill a hole at the end of the crack, this will stop the crack from spreading any further. Then i used a gas soldering iron & melted a "V" shaped groove all the way along the crack, inside & out. This alone will melt the plastic either side of the crack together, repairing the crack but with limited strength. Then i got some plastic cable ties & melted them into the groove using the soldering iron.... Job done!
If the repair is going to be visible, like a fairing etc, you can then sand down the high spots of the weld, skim with body filler, sand down smooth again & paint.

well thanks for the info, but I don't have cracks exactly. the squirrels have chewed holes all over the tanks. they even chewed up the black plastic caps on my gas cans. i hate tree rats. i need to find some resin or something that sticks to plastic and is impervious to gas

I have an actual plastic welder that you can get cheap at Harbor Freight, you could weld patches of similar plastic in and gas wouldn't touch it. You could also use PC-7, we used to patch gas tanks on the tool wagons in the junkyard with it. It is a 2 part aircraft grade plastic resin.Rough the plastic up so it can bond if you use the resin and be sure it is extremely clean and dry.

Wade, I had that problem a couple of years ago. Tried JB Weld and several other plastic weld products that were available locally. None lasted more than a month with a full tank of gas inside. I got tired of draining the tank after every use and a new replacement was big $$$, so I called around to the mower repair shops and for $5, they pulled a tank from their boneyard out back. Good luck! And now I keep a little bag of mothballs hanging inside the engine compartment.
I did not try the PC-7 that Ian recommends (never heard of it before), but it was difficult finding other pieces of similar plastic to use as a patch.

The PC-7 lasted long enough for the metal around the repair to rust out before failure. Haven't tried it on a plastic tank.

Three cats and a couple of resident owls here. Add the eagle in a tree across the street and I haven't seen one in years.

They make some very effective pellet rifles nowadays. Rifled barrels, heavy pellets with muzzle velocity of 1100 FPS. I know a guy with a 38 Cal pellet rifle, runs off a scuba tank. Almost equals a 380 auto.
